DAZE SERIES

The Daze series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in alluvium from pyroclastics over chert, dolomitic limestone and calcareous sandstone. Daze soils are on hillslopes and have slopes of 2 to 30 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 52 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Lithic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Daze gravelly loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 2 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/2) gravelly loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, non sticky and nonplastic; common fine roots; many fine interstitial pores; has about 20 percent chert and quartzite pebbles; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 3 inches thick)

A2--2 to 12 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/2) gravelly loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots; common fine tubular pores; has about 15 percent chert and quartzite pebbles; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 9 inches thick)

Bt1--12 to 15 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) gravelly clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) moist; strong fine and medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common fine roots; common fine tubular pores; thin continuous clay films on faces of peds; has about 15 percent chert and quartzite pebbles; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual wavy boundary. (2 to 3 inches thick)

Bt2--15 to 19 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/4) gravelly clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; strong fine and medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; common fine roots; few fine pores; thin continuous clay films on faces of peds; has about 15 percent chert and quartzite pebbles; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt irregular boundary. (4 to 7 inches thick)

2R--19 to 22 inches; fractured chert, dolomitic limestone.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competitors.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Daze soils are on hillslopes. Elevation ranges from 5,700 to 6,100 feet. Slopes range from 2 to 30 percent. These soils formed in alluvium from pyroclastics over chert, dolomitic limestone and calcareous sandstone. The annual precipitation ranges from 12 to 14 inches occuring as summer thunderstorms and winter rain or snow. The mean annual temperature range is from 50 to 54 degrees F. The frost-free season is 130 to 170 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Greenlaw, Lynx, Tortugas and Winona soils. All of these soils lack an argillic horizon. Also, Lynx and Greenlaw soils are deep. Tortugas and Winona soils are loamy- skeletal.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is blue grama, fourwing saltbush, rabbitbrush, pine dropseed, little seed ricegrass, algerita, cliffrose and scattered juniper and turbinella oak.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Coconino County, Arizona. Inextensive. MLRAs 35 & 39.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Phoenix, Arizona

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Coconino County, Arizona, Central Part, 1980.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and feature recognized in this pedon are:

Mollic epipedon - the zone from 0 to 15 inches (A & Bt1 horizon)

Argillic horizon - the zone from 12 to 19 inches (Bt horizons)

Lithic contact - at 19 inches (2R horizon)

Classification changed to an Aridic Lithic subgroup in 2006. This change was made to be consistent with the moisture regime.

Classified according to Keys to Soil Taxonomy Tenth Edition, 2006.
