DEADMAN SERIES
The Deadman series consists of deep, well or somewhat excessively drained soils formed in material weathered from dioritic rock. Deadman soils are on broad ridges and mountain sideslopes and have slopes of 20 to 65 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 70 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 48 degrees F.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Pachic Humixerepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Deadman loam - on a southeast facing convex slope of 35 percent under white fir with a few chinquapin at 5,000 feet elevation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. When described on September 14, 1977, the soil was dry in the surface 25 inches and moist in the sub-soil).
Oi--0 to 5 centimeters(0 to 2 inches); fresh and decomposing needle litter.
A1--5 to 51 centimeters(2 to 20 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) loam, black (10YR 2/1), moist; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine, fine, and medium, few coarse roots; many very fine interstitial and tubular pores; strongly acid (pH 5.3); clear smooth boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick)
A2--51 to 71 centimeters(20 to 28 inches); very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loam, black (10YR 2/1) moist; weak fine subangular blocky parting to weak fine structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine, many medium, common coarse roots; many very fine interstitial and tubular pores; strongly acid (pH 5.3); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)
A3--71 to 94 centimeters(28 to 37 inches); dark brown (10YR 3/3) loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) moist; weak fine subangular blocky parting to weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; many very fine interstitial and tubular pores; strongly acid (pH 5.2); clear smooth boundary. (8 to 24 inches thick)
Bw--94 to 140 centimeters(37 to 55 inches); brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky parting to weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine, few medium and coarse roots; many very fine interstitial and tubular pores; 15 percent pebbles; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear wavy boundary. (13 to 25 inches thick)
Cr--140 to 157 centimeters(55 to 62 inches); strongly weathered quartz diorite.
TYPE LOCATION: Humboldt County; on Ammon Ridge, on Forest Service Road 5N01 approximately 0.75 mile from Grouse Mountain junction (F.S. Road 6N01), 75 feet down slope from road; SE 1/4, SE 1/4, sec. 24, T. 5 N., R. 4 E., Humboldt base meridian.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to diorite ranges from 100 to more than 150cm. The mean annual soil temperature is 45 degrees F, mean summer soil temperature is 48 degrees F.
The soil between the depths of 8 to 24 inches is usually dry in all parts from mid-July to mid-October, and moist in all parts from November to April. The base saturation by Hach kit, in the epipedon is about 25 to 30 percent. The profile is slightly to strongly acid throughout.
The A horizon is 10YR 3/1, 3/2, 3/3, 4/2, 4/3, 4/4. Moist colors are 10YR 2/1, 2/2, 3/1, 3/2, 3/3. It is loam or sandy loam, with 0 to 15 percent gravel.
The B horizon is 10YR 4/3, 5/4; 2.5Y 6/4. Moist colors are 10YR 3/2, 4/4; 2.5Y 4/4. It is loam or sandy loam with 5 to 30 percent gravel.
In some pedons the C horizon is 10YR 5/4, 6/4, 5/6. Moist color is 10YR 3/4 or 7.5YR 4/4. It is loam, loamy sand or sandy loam with 20 to 35 percent gravel.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series at this time.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Deadman soils are on mountain sideslopes and broad ridges. Slopes are 5 to 65 percent. The soils formed in material weathered from dioritic rock. Elevations are 4,500 to 6,500 feet. The climate is subhumid mesothermal with warm dry summers and cool wet winters. Mean annual precipitation varies from 65 to 80 inches. Mean January temperature is 43 degrees F, mean July temperature is 65 degrees F, and mean annual temperature is 48 degrees F. Frost-free season is estimated to be 80 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Rogue soils. Rogue soils have a Cambic horizon and an Ochric epipedon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well or somewhat excessively drained; medium runoff; moderately rapid permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for timber production and watershed. Native vegetation is white fir, some red fir, Sadler oak, and chinquapin.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern California. The series is not extensive. MLRA 5.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Humboldt County, California, 2012. Proposed 1981. Source of name is from Deadman Ridge.
REMARKS: Organic carbon is assumed to decrease regularly with depth.
ADDITIONAL DATA: A soil moisture and temperature probe is located at this site. The temperature data indicates a frigid soil temperature regime. This series was established to identify and map a new family in a survey area that classified soil map components only to the family level.
Soils classified using the 11th edition of the Keys to Soil Taxonomy. These
soils were previously classified as Humic Dystroxerepts.
