DEDRICK SERIES

The Dedrick series consists of shallow, somewhat excessively drained soils formed in residuum and colluvium from metavolcanic rocks or sometimes mica schist. They are on mountains. Mean annual precipitation is about 45 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 60 degrees F. Slope is 50 to 90 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, thermic Lithic Haploxerepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Dedrick very gravelly loam--on a convex southwest facing slope of 72 percent under forbs and grasses with scattered canyon live oak, mountain mahogany, and digger pine at an elevation of 3,400 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated. When described on May 19, 1983, the soil was very slightly moist).

The soil surface is partially covered by scattered leaves and twigs, 60 percent pebbles, 10 percent cobbles.

A--0 to 3 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) very gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; common fine and very fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; 55 percent pebbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick).

Bw1--3 to 11 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) extremely gravelly loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; moderate medium and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few medium, common fine and very fine roots; few fine and very fine tubular pores; 55 percent pebbles, 10 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick).

Bw2--11 to 15 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) extremely gravelly loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak medium and fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine, common very fine roots; few fine and very fine tubular pores; 60 percent pebbles, 15 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.5); abrupt wavy boundary. (3 to 5 inches thick).

R--15 inches; fractured, hard schist. Cracks more than 4 inches apart. Very few fine roots in cracks.

TYPE LOCATION: Trinity County, California; 3.25 miles northeast of Helena; 5.7 miles west of Junction City on Highway 299, turn north onto Brock Gulch Access Road, go 4.4 miles, take left fork go 0.7 mile, take jeep trail to left go 0.6 miles, take jeep trail to left again, go 0.2 miles, pedon downhill to south 300 feet; 2,000 feet east, 2,000 feet north of the southwest corner of section 14, T.34 N., R.11W. Dedrick Quadrangle.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to bedrock ranges from 10 to 20 inches. The control section averages 55 to 80 percent pebbles and cobbles. Mean annual soil temperature is 59 to 65 degrees F. The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from about June to October. The soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees F from about February to December, and exceeds 47 degrees F from about March to November.

The A horizon has colors of 10YR 4/4, 5/6, 5/4, 5/2, 7.5YR 4/6, or 4/4. Moist colors are 10YR 3/3, 3/4, 3/2, or 7.5YR 3/4. It has 15 to 25 percent clay. It is slightly acid or neutral.

The Bw horizon has colors of 10YR 5/4, 6/6, 6/3, 7.5YR 4/6, 5/4, or 4/4. Moist colors are 10YR 3/3, 4/4, 4/3, 3/4, or 7.5YR 3/4. It is extremely gravelly loam or very gravelly loam. It has 14 to 27 percent clay, and 45 to 80 percent pebbles and cobbles.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other soils in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dedrick soils are on south facing mountain slopes. Elevation is 1,500 to 4,500 feet. Slopes are 50 to 90 percent. These soils formed in colluvium over residuum from metavolcanic rocks. The climate is subhumid with warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters. Mean annual precipitation is 30 to 55 inches. Snowfall ranges from 0 to 8 inches. Mean January temperature is about 39 degrees F. Mean July temperature is about 76 degrees F. Mean annual temperature is 57 to 63 degrees F. The frost-free period is 90 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Brockgulch and Brownbear soils. Brockgulch soils have bedrock at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. Brownbear soils also have bedrock at a depth of 20 to 40 inches and have a mean annual soil temperature of 52 to 59 degrees F.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; very rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for watershed. Vegetation consists of canyon live oak, buckbrush, digger pine, western mountain mahogany, soft chess and other grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The soils are not extensive. They occur in the Klamath Mountains in northern California.
