(Combined thickness of the Bw horizons is 13 to 32 inches).

2Cr--48 inches; weathered volcanic breccia.

TYPE LOCATION: Shasta County, California; about 7.5 miles northwest of Burney; 2,000 feet north and 1,600 feet west from the southeast corner of sec. 29, T. 36 N., R. 2 E., ontgoery Creek NE (Chalk Mtn) Quadrangle (7.5 minute series).

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to paralithic contact is 40 to 60 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 50 degrees F. The soil temperature exceeds 41 degrees F from early March to late December (300 days) and exceeds 47 degrees F from mid April to mid November. The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from early June to early October (110 to 130 days) and is moist in all or some part the rest of the year. Some pedons have a C horizon that have textures of very gravelly or very cobbly sandy loam or loam.

The A horizon color is 10YR 5/4, 5/3, 4/4, 4/3; 7.5YR 5/4, or 4/4. Moist color is 10YR 3/4, 3/2 or 7.5YR 3/4. Organic matter ranges from 10 to 15 percent. Clay content ranges from 5 to 15 percent. Rock fragments range from 15 to 35 percent. NaF pH is 10.0 to 11.5. Reaction is moderately acid or slightly acid. Base saturation by sum of cations ranges from 5 to 35 percent. Bulk density ranges from 50 to 90.

The 2Bw horizon color is 10YR 7/3, 6/6, 6/4; 7.5YR 4/4, 5/4, 5/6, or 6/6. Moist color is 10YR 4/4, 4/6; 7.5YR 3/4, 4/4, 4/6; or 5YR 3/4. Organic matter ranges from 1.0 to 5.0 percent. Texture is very gravelly sandy loam, very gravelly loam, very cobbly sandy loam, or very cobbly loam. Clay content ranges from 10 to 20 percent. Rock fragments range from 35 to 60 percent. NaF pH is 9.0 to 10.0. Reaction is strongly acid to slightly acid. Base saturation by sum of cations ranges from 5 to 40 percent.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Depner soils are on hills, lava plateaus and toeslopes. Slopes are 5 to 50 percent. These soils formed in tephra, dominantly andesitic. Elevation is 3,200 to 5,000 feet. The climate is subhumid with warm dry summers and cold moist winters. The mean annual precipitation is 30 to 60 inches. Snowfall is 36 to 60 inches. The mean annual temperature is 45 to 48 degrees F. The mean January temperature is about 31 degrees F. The mean July temperature is about 66 degrees F. Frost-free period is 80 to 100 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Jimmerson, Mounthat, Obie (T) and Wyntoon. Jimmerson and Wyntoon soils have argillic horizons. Obie (T) soils have umbric epipedons and a frigid soil temperature regime. Mounthat soils have a melanic epipedon and a frigid soil temperature.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; very slow to rapid runoff; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for timber production. The vegetation is white fir, Douglas-fir, ponderosa pine, incense cedar, California black oak and sugar pine, and associated shrubs, mainly Pacific dogwood, gooseberry, and serviceberry.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Shasta, California. The soils are not extensive. MLRA is 22.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California

SERIES PROPOSED: Shasta County, Intermountain Soil Survey Area, California 1989. Source of name is coined.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - the zone from 0 to 16 inches, (A1, A2 and A3 horizons).

Cambic horizon - the zone from 16 to 48 inches (Bw1 and Bw2 horizons).

Particle-size control section is from 0 to 40 inches; the upper part is medial and the lower part is medial-skeletal. Since most of the control section is dominated by medial-skeletal material and no contrasting particle size is available for use; will call medial-skeletal.

Andic properties data definitions:

P-ret: phosphate retention of the less than 2mm fraction.

B.D.: bulk density of the less than 2mm fraction on an oven dry basis.

pH NaF: pH of soil mixed with saturated sodium floride solution.

Glass: percent volcanic glass.

Alo: acid-oxalate-extractable aluminum of the less than 2mm fraction.

Feo: acid-oxalate-extractable iron of the less than 2mm fraction.

15 bar H20: dried 1500 kPa water retention as a percent.

Data elements with a * are estimated.

NC: not calculated.

ND: not done.

ADDITIONAL DATA: This pedon was sampled by UCD Soil Morphology Laboratory in 1986. Pedon number is 86CA-089-003, lab no. 1649 unpublished. Additional pedons - 1648.
