DIEHLSTADT SERIES
The Diehlstadt series consists of very deep, somewhat poorly drained soils formed in sandy alluvial sediments. These soils are in depressional areas and tributary channels of the former flood plains of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. They have moderate or moderately rapid permeability in the surface horizons and rapid permeability in the underlying material. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature is 60 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is 46 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, thermic Typic Epiaquolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Diehlstadt loamy coarse sand--on a 1 percent slightly concave slope in a cultivated field at an elevation of 320 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Ap--0 to 7 inches; black (10YR 2/1) loamy coarse sand; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/1) dry; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; many fine herbaceous roots; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (5 to 18 inches thick)
A--7 to 18 inches; black (10YR 2/1) loamy coarse sand; dark grayish brown (10YR 4/1) dry; weak very fine granular structure; very friable; common fine herbaceous roots; medium acid; gradual smooth boundary. (0 to 14 inches thick)
C1--18 to 30 inches; very dark gray (10YR 3/1) fine sand; light brownish gray (10YR 6/1) dry; single grain; loose; few fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) masses of iron accumulation; few fine herbaceous roots; medium acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 30 inches thick)
C2--30 to 48 inches; mixed strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) brown (10YR 5/3), and pale brown (10YR 6/3) fine sand with thin strata of coarse and very coarse sand; common fine distinct yellowish red (5YR 5/8) masses of iron accumulation; single grain; loose; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 38 inches thick)
C3--48 to 60 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/4) fine sand; single grain; loose; slightly acid.
TYPE LOCATION: Scott County, Missouri; about 1 mile south of Morley and 1/8 mile west of Highway 61; about 7005 feet north and 1176 feet east of the southwest corner, sec. 2, T. 27 N., R. 13 E; Oran USGS quadrangle, lat. 37 degrees 1 minute 10 seconds N. and long. 89 degrees 37 minutes 45 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and thickness of the mollic epipedon ranges from 12 to 24 inches. The soil is typically strongly acid to neutral. Sand grains immediately below the mollic epipedon are uncoated.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. The lower part of the A horizon commonly has distinct or prominent mottles. Some pedons have thin layers and/or pockets of dark concretions (iron and manganese oxides) in the lower part of the A horizon. The A horizon generally is loamy coarse sand, loamy sand or sandy loam, but ranges to include sandy clay loam.
The C1 horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 1 or 2. Mottles, when present, have hue of 10YR to 2.5YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 3 to 6. Texture is typically fine sand or sand but ranges to loamy sand or coarse sand.
The C2 and subsequent horizons have hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 3 to 6, and chroma of 1 to 6. It typically is fine sand or sand but coarse sand is within the range. Some pedons have thin horizons and pockets of loamy material or thin horizons or pockets of concretions and masses of iron and manganese below 40 inches.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Diehlstadt soils are on nearly level and slightly depressional areas adjacent to old natural levees. They formed in sandy alluvial sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual temperature ranges from 58 to 62 degrees F., and mean annual precipitation ranges from 44 to 50 inches.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Canalou,
Clana,
Lilbourn,
Malden, and
Scotco soils. Canalou, Clana, Malden, and Scotco soils do not have mollic epipedon, are better drained, and are on higher nearby landscapes. Lilbourn soils are coarse-loamy, do not have a mollic epipedon, and are on slightly higher landscape positions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat poorly drained. Runoff is negligible. Permeability is moderate or moderately rapid in the A horizons and rapid in the underlying material.
USE AND VEGETATION: Soils are under cultivation with corn, soybeans, and small grains as the principal crops. Some areas are in grass for hay and pasture. Native vegetation was water-tolerant hardwoods such as baldcypress and water tupelo with understories of rushes, sedges, and grasses.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The Mississippi River delta (MLRA 131) area of southeast Missouri. This series is of moderate extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series are: mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to 18 inches (Ap and A horizons).
