DINGLISHNA SERIES
The Dinglishna series consists of shallow, very poorly drained soils formed in sandy and silty colluvium along the borders between muskegs and sandy terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 34 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is about 28 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS:
TYPICAL PEDON: Dinglishna sandy loam -- undisturbed on a 1 percent slope, at 100 feet elevation. (All colors are for moist soil)
Oi--6 inches to 0; black (10YR 2/1) mat of partially decomposed moss, leaves, twigs, and other plant parts; many roots; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)
E--0 to 6 inches; gray (10YR 5/1) sandy loam; massive; nonsticky and nonplastic; few roots; few pockets of silt loam; very strongly acid (pH 4.7); abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 6 inches thick)
Bsc--6 to 14 inches; very dusky red (2.5YR 2/2) loamy sand; single grained; loose; many fine and medium hard concretions; very strongly acid (pH 4.7); abrupt wavy boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick)
Bsm--14 to 20 inches; very dusky red (2.5YR 2/2) sand; strongly cemented; very strongly acid (pH 4.7); few thin black bands and streaks. (6 to 10 inches thick)
Cg--20 to 60 inches; mottled grey (10YR 5/1) and very dusky red (2.5YR 2/2) sand; single grained; loose; many fine and medium concretions; very strongly acid (pH 4.7).
TYPE LOCATION: Susitna Valley Area, Alaska; 1300 feet south and 600 feet east of the NW corner of section 33, T.16N., R.5W., Seward Meridian.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the strongly cemented ortstein pan ranges from 14 to 20 inches. The solum ranges from 16 to 26 inches thick with the combined spodic horizons ranging from 12 to 20 inches thick. The ortstein pan is 6 to 10 inches thick. Reaction throughout the profile ranges from extremely acid to strongly acid. Texture of the control section is loamy sand or sand.
An A horizon is present in some pedons.
The E horizon has hue from 5YR to 10YR; value from 3 to 6; and chroma of 1 or 2.
The Bsc horizon has hue from 2.5YR to 7.5YR; value from 2 to 4; and chroma from 2 to 4. Texture is loamy sand or sand.
The Bsm horizon has hue from 2.5YR to 7.5YR; value moist from 2 to 4; and chroma moist from 2 to 4. Texture is loamy sand or sand.
Texture of the C horizon is loamy sand or sand.
COMPETING SERIES: This is the
Wadleigh series in the same subgroup. Wadleigh soils have less than 50 percent fine or coarser sand and do not contain ortstein.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dinglishna soils are on or near the edges of muskegs adjacent to sandy stream terraces. The soils formed in sandy and silty colluvium. The climate is transitional between maritime and continental with the average annual precipitation ranging from 26 to 30 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 33 to 36 degrees F. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Moderately rapid permeability above the ortstein. Runoff is very slow. The water table fluctuates between 0 and 24 inches but is normally within 10 inches of the surface.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is moss, sedges, low shrubs, and scattered black spruce.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southcentral Alaska. The series is of minor extent.
SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: WASILLA, ALASKA
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Susitna Valley Area, Alaska; 1979.
REMARKS: Diagnostic features and horizons recognized in this profile include: an albic horizon from 0 to 6 inches; a spodic horizon from 6 to 20 inches; a cemented spodic horizon from 14 to 20 inches; loamy sand and sand throughout the control section; cryic temperature regime.
