DISHNER SERIES

The Dishner series consists of shallow, well drained soils that formed in material weathered from sandstone and conglomerate. Dishner soils are on ridge tops, benches and high terraces and have slopes of 0 to 30 percent. Permeability is slow. The average annual precipitation is about 12 inches and the average annual air temperature is about 49 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, mesic Lithic Xeric Haplargids

TYPICAL PEDON: Dishner extremely stony loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

E--0 to 6 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) extremely stony loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; moderate thin platy and moderate medium and fine granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; common fine pores; slightly acid (pH 6.5); abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)

Bt--6 to 16 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/3) clay, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate and strong medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium angular blocky; very hard, very firm, very sticky and very plastic; few fine roots; few fine pores; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) coatings on the top of peds; thick continuous brown (7.5YR 5/2) clay films on the faces of peds; 10 percent pebbles, cobbles and stones; neutral (pH 6.9); abrupt wavy boundary. (6 to 12 inches thick)

R--16 inches; sandstone or conglomerate.

TYPE LOCATION: Gem County, Idaho, about 8 miles northeast of Emmett, l90 feet south and 300 feet west of the center of the northeast l/4 section 28, T. 6 N., R. l E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Annual soil temperature - 48 to 53 degrees F.
Depth to bedrock - 10 to 20 inches. In some pedons, there is a thin, discontinuous indurated silica or silica-iron hard pan on the bedrock. Reaction - slightly acid to mildly alkaline.

E horizon
Value - 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma - 1 or 2
In some pedons there is a very thin Al over the E horizon.

Bt horizon:
Hue - 10YR, 7.5YR or 5YR
Value - 5 or 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist
Chroma - 2 through 4.
Texture - C, CB-C, GR-C

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Ceejay series. Ceejay soils lack E horizons and have average annual soil temperatures of 54 to 59 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dishner soils are on ridge tops and benches or high terraces. Slopes are 0 to 30 percent. The soil formed in residuum from sandstone and conglomerate with a slight influence from loess. It may occur as depression areas between mounds of deeper soils. The elevation ranges from 2,200 to 4,000 feet. The average annual precipitation is 11 to 14 inches and includes 2 to 4 feet of snowfall. Average annual air temperature is 47 to 51 degrees F. The frost free season is 120 to 145 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Haw and Perla soils. Haw soils are over 60 inches deep. Perla soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock and lack an A2 horizon. These soils are on benches or high terraces.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or rapid runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Use for rangeland. Native vegetation is bluebunch wheatgrass, Sandberg bluegrass, threetip sagebrush, and associated forbs. Annual brome and medusahead wildrye have invaded the soils.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Idaho. The soil is inextensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Gem County, Idaho, l962.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon - soil surface to 6 inches. (E horizon)

Argillic horizon - 6 to 16 inches, more than 35 percent clay. (Bt horizon)

Lithic contact - the boundary at 16 inches. (R horizon)
