DOGMOUNTAIN SERIES


The Dogmountain series consists of moderately deep to a duripan, well drained soils that formed in volcanic ash and cinders from mixed igneous rock sources with an admixture of loess . Dogmountain soils are on hills. Slopes are 4 to 20 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 11 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 44 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy-skeletal, glassy, frigid Vitrixerandic Haplodurids

TYPICAL PEDON: Dogmountain gravelly loam on a 4 percent slope in rangeland at elevation of 4,537 feet. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) gravelly loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak medium fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots; many very fine interstitial pores; 20 percent gravel size cinders; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary.

A2--3 to 9 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 25 percent gravel size cinders; moderately alkaline (pH 8.1); clear smooth boundary. (Combined thickness of the A horizon is 3 to 10 inches thick)

Bw1--9 to 12 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine and common very fine medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; 50 percent gravel size cinders; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); gradual smooth boundary.

Bw2--12 to 21 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/3) extremely gravelly loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine common very fine and common medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent with disseminated lime; 70 percent gravel size cinders; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the B horizons 8 to 27 inches thick)

Bkqm--21 to 30 inches; indurated duripan 2 mm. opal coating on upper side; 70 percent gravel size cinders in the duripan; strongly effervescent with disseminated lime; abrupt irregular boundary (6 to 18 inches thick)

BCk--30 to 60 inches; black (10YR 2/1) gravel size cinders with few 3 inch wide channels with soil material and few fine roots; black (10YR 2/1) moist; single grain; strongly effervescent in common segregated concentrations on individual gravels; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2).

TYPE LOCATION: Harney County, Oregon; about 2 miles southwest of Dog Mountain; 150 feet west and 1050 feet south of the northeast corner of section 11, T. 26 S., R. 30 E.; Northeast Harney Lake quadrangle; Latitude 43 degrees 20 minutes 08 seconds N, Longitude 119 degrees, 04 minutes 43 seconds W., NAD 1927.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 45 to 47 degrees F. The soil moisture control section is dry for one-half to three-forths of the time when the soil temperature is above 41 degrees F. Depth to bedrock is over 60 inches. Depth to the indurated duripan is 20 to 30 inches. The particle size control section averages 10 to 18 percent clay and 50 to 70 percent gravel size cinders. The acid oxalate aluminum plus one-half the iron is 0.3 to 0.6 percent.

The A horizon has a value of 3 through 5 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3 dry and moist. It is slightly to moderately alkaline. Phosphate retention is 15 to 25 percent. It has 15 to 25 percent gravel size cinders.

The Bw horizons have a value of 6 through 8 dry, 3 through 5 moist and chroma of 2 or 3 dry and moist. Phosphate retention is 20 to 30 percent. It has 50 to 70 percent gravel size cinders.

The Bkqm horizon is 6 to 18 inches thick. It contains 65 to 80 percent gravel size cinders It is slightly to moderately alkaline.

The BCk horizon averages 95 to 100 percent gravel size cinders.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Dogmountain soils are on low hills near volcanic vents and have slopes of 4 to 20 percent. The soils formed in volcanic ash and cinders with an admixture of loess from mixed igneous rock sources. Elevations are 4,150 to 4,500 feet. The climate is characterized by cold, moist winters and hot, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 10 to 12 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 43 to 45 degrees F. The frost free period is 50 to 80 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lawen, Middlebox, Outerkirk, Reallis, and Wolverine soils. Lawen soils are on adjacent high lake terraces, have a mollic epipedon, and lack a duripan. Middlebox soils are on adjacent higher hills, and lack a duripan. Outerkirk soils are on adjacent lower alluvial fans and fan terraces, are mesic, and lack a duripan. Reallis soils are on adjacent lake terraces and lack a duripan. Wolverine soils are on sand dunes, and have sand and loamy sand textures throughout.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; moderate permeability above the duripan and very rapid below the duripan.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for rangeland. Potential native vegetation is Thurber needlegrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, Wyoming big sagebrush, Sandberg bluegrass, bottlebrush squirreltail, Indian ricegrass.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Oregon; MLRA 23.. The series is of small extent.

Indurated duripan - from 21 to 30 inches (Bkqm horizon)
