EAGLEROCK SERIES

The Eaglerock series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils that formed in residuum and colluvium derived from granitic rocks. The Eaglerock soils are on concave mountain side slopes. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 300 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 8 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Eaglerock gravelly coarse sandy loam, 30 to 50 percent slopes, extremely bouldery, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) The soil surface is partially covered with 25 percent gravel, 15 percent cobbles and 15 percent boulders.

A1--0 to 5 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) gravelly coarse sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine vesicular and common very fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (3 to 10 cm thick)

A2--5 to 13 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; weak very thin platy structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine, few fine and medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; 12 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.0); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 13 cm thick)

Bt1--13 to 30 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) very gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, sticky and plastic; many very fine, few fine and medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; few thin clay films lining pores and bridging sand grains; 35 percent gravel, 3 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 7.0); gradual smooth boundary. (13 to 30 cm thick)

Bt2--30 to 48 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) very gravelly sandy clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, sticky and plastic; common very fine, few fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; few thin clay films lining pores and bridging sand grains; 40 percent gravel, 5 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick)

Bt3--48 to 79 cm; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly sandy clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, sticky and plastic; common very fine, few fine and medium roots; common very fine tubular pores; few thin clay films lining pores and bridging sand grains; 40 percent gravel, 3 percent cobbles; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 38 cm thick)

2Cr--79 to 152 cm; soft, weathered granitic grus with few very fine roots along weak fractures.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ashue, Badena, Badenaugh, Gitabyte, Grinrod, Ister, Lemm, Leviathan, Nosrac , Oest, Searles, Searvar, Shawmount, Shree, Shroe, Tollgate, Trid and Tristan series.

Ashue, Badena, Badenaugh, Lemm, Leviathan, Nosrac, Oest, Shawmount, Shree, Shroe and Tollgate soils do not have bedrock within 100 cm. Gitabyte, Grinrod, Ister, Searles soils have a lithic contact at 50 to 100 cm. Searvar soils have rock fragments consisting mainly of cobble size. Trid soils have a mollic epipedon that is 20 to 30 cm thick and 55 to 75 percent rock fragments in the argillic horizon. Tristan soils are 100 to 150 cm to bedrock.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Eaglerock soils are on concave mountain side slopes. These soils formed in residuum and colluvium derived from granitic rocks. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. Elevations are 1,460 to 2,380 meters. The climate is cool, semiarid with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 250 to 350 mm; mean annual temperature is 7 to 9 degrees C, and the frost-free season is 100 to 120 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Acrelane, Arclay and Say soils. Acrelane and Arclay soils are shallow to a paralithic contact. Say soils are fine-loamy.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; moderately low saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is mainly mountain big sagebrush, green ephedra, arrowleaf balsamroot and gooseberry currant.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Nevada. MLRA 27, 23. These soils are not extensive.
