EUER SERIES

The Euer series consists of deep, well drained soils formed in glacial outwash and material from volcanic sources. These soils are on terraces. The mean annual precipitation is about 30 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Ultic Haploxeralfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Euer sandy loam, forested. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

01--2 to 0 inches; pine litter and duff.

A1--0 to 5 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine interstitial pores; 10 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.2); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

A3--5 to 15 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; few very fine interstitial pores; about 15 percent gravel; very few thin clay films line pores, root channels, and as bridges; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 11 inches thick)

B2t--15 to 24 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, medium and coarse roots; few very fine interstitial and tubular pores; few moderately thick clay films in pores, root channels and as bridges; 40 percent pebbles and 3 percent cobbles; slightly acid (pH 6.2); gradual irregular boundary. (4 to 18 inches thick)

B3--24 to 47 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) very gravelly sandy loam, dark yellowish brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and slightly plastic; few fine and medium roots; few very fine and fine tubular pores; few colloid stains on mineral grains; 65 percent pebbles (partially weathered) and 5 percent cobbles; moderately acid (pH 6.0). (6 to 26 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Nevada County, California; 5 miles northeast of Truckee; .9 mile west from intersection of East Meadow Road along Slaughter House Road; near center of NW1/4 NE1/4 sec. 23, T.18N., R.16E.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum is 24 to 36 inches thick. The umbric epipedon is 7 to 15 inches thick and in some pedons includes the upper part of the B horizon. The base saturation is 35 to 50 percent in the upper horizons. Mean annual soil temperature is 41 to 45 degrees F. The mean summer soil temperature for pedons with 0 horizons (1 to 3 inches thick) is 49 to 53 degrees F., and 59 to 62 degrees F. for pedons without 0 horizons. The soil is dry between depths of 8 and 30 inches from mid July through mid October and moist in some or all parts the rest of the time in most years.

The A horizon has colors of 10YR 4/2, 4/3, 5/2, 5/3 dry, and 10YR 3/2, 3/3, and 7.5YR 3/2 moist. It is coarse sandy loam, sandy loam, or loam with 10 to 20 percent pebbles. This horizon has granular or weak subangular blocky structure. It is slightly or moderately acid.

The B2t horizon has colors of 10YR 5/3, 5/4, 6/6 dry and 10YR 3/3, 5/6, 7.5YR 3/2, 4/4 moist. It is clay loam, sandy clay loam or heavy sandy loam and has 18 to 30 percent clay and 35 to 70 percent by volume rock fragments (including pebbles through stones). This horizon has subangular blocky structure or is massive. It is slightly or medium acid.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Inville and Pincushion series. Inville soils lack umbric epipedons, and have argillic horizons with 5YR hue and less than 18 percent clay. Pincushion soils have 5YR hue in the B2t horizon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Euer soils are on gently sloping to moderately steep terraces at elevations of 5,500 to 6,300 feet. They formed in glacial outwash and fill from predominantly volcanic sources. The climate is cool continental. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 25 to 35 inches. The mean annual temperature is 43 degrees F., mean January temperature is 26 degrees F., and mean July temperature is 61 degrees F. The average frost-free season is 20 to 40 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Fugawee, Trojan and Martis soils. Fugawee, Trojan, and Martis soils have less than 35 percent rock fragments in the control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderately slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for woodland, grazing and recreation. Vegetation is Jeffrey pine, ponderosa pine, big sagebrush, bitterbrush, wyethia, and perennial grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Intermountain valleys of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of northeastern California. The series is inextensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California
