TYPICAL PEDON: Faa silt loam - on a slope of 6 percent under an aspen and white spruce forest at 370 feet elevation. (All colors are for moist soil unless noted)

Oi--0 to 3 inches, (0 to 7 cm); black (7.5YR2.5/1); slightly decomposed plant material; many very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

A--3 to 6 inches, (7 to 15 cm); dark brown (10YR3/3); silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.2); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Bw--6 to 12 inches, (15 to 30 cm); dark brown (7.5YR3/4); silt loam; moderate thin platy structure; very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.3); clear smooth boundary. (5 to 21 inches thick)

C--12 to 39 inches, (30 to 100 cm); brown (10YR5/3); fine sandy loam; massive; very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; few fine roots; common fine faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations and common fine distinct light brownish gray (2.5Y6/2) redoximorphic depletions; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (14 to 29 inches thick)

2C1--39 to 59 inches, (100 to 150 cm); reddish brown (2.5YR 5/3); loamy sand; massive; very friable, nonsticky, nonplastic; slight effervescence; common fine faint yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) redoximorphic concentrations and common fine distinct light brownish gray (2.5Y6/2) redoximorphic depletions; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 32 inches thick)

2C2--59 to 72inches, (150 to 183 cm); dark gray (10YR4/1); fine sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky, nonplastic; strong effervescence; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6). (80 to 127 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Greater Nenana Area, Alaska; about 2 miles southeast of Nenana; in the NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4, section 31, T. 4 S., R. 8 W.; Fairbanks C5 1:36,360 quad; Fairbanks Meridian; UTM north 7157927 and UTM east 401218, zone 6.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:
Parent material: Loess over eolian sand
Landform: stabilized dunes on flood plains
Slope: 0 to 30 percent
Mean annual air temperature: 25 to 30 degrees F., -4 to -1 C.
Mean annual precipitation: 9 to 15 inches, 230 to 380 mm

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Tatlanika(T) and Totatlanika(T). Tatlanika(T) and Totatlanika soils are on floodplains and are poorly drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: moderately well drained, moderate runoff, saturated hydraulic conductivity moderate in the loamy mantle and rapid in the eolian sand substratum.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for recreation, home sites and wildlife habitat. The native vegetation includes aspen, white spruce and paper birch.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 229, Interior Alaska Lowlands, The series is of small extent.
