FARRY SERIES


The Farry series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils that formed in loamy and/or gravelly alluvium of Pleistocene age. These nearly level to moderately steep soils occur on treads and risers of stream terraces and terrace remnants on plains. Slope ranges from 0 to 15 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 15.6 degrees C (60 degrees F), and mean annual precipitation is about 635 mm (25 in).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Argiustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Farry fine sandy loam, on a 2 percent slope in rangeland, and an elevation of 573 m (1880 ft).

A--0 to 30 cm (0 to 12 in); brown (7.5YR 4/3), fine sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/3), moist; moderate fine and medium granular structure; soft, very friable; common very fine and fine roots throughout; common very fine and fine low continuity vesicular and tubular pores; common worm casts; 1 percent rounded mixed gravel; noneffervescent; neutral; clear smooth boundary. (Thickness of the A horizon is 18 to 38 cm [7 to 15 in])

Bt--30 to 53 cm (12 to 21 in); brown (7.5YR 4/4), sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/4), moist; moderate medium and coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; moderately hard, friable; common very fine and fine roots throughout; common very fine and fine low continuity vesicular and tubular pores; few medium tubular pores; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; common worm casts; 3 percent rounded mixed gravel; noneffervescent; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. Thickness of the upper Bt horizon is 18 to 104 cm (7 to 41 in)

Btk--53 to 89 cm (21 to 35 in); reddish brown (5YR 5/4), sandy clay loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4), moist; moderate medium and coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; hard, friable; common very fine and fine roots throughout; common very fine and fine low continuity vesicular and tubular pores; few medium tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; few worm casts; common fine and medium calcium carbonate threads; 4 percent rounded mixed gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. Thickness of the lower Bt horizon is 0 to 74 cm (0 to 29 in)

BCk--89 to 117 cm (35 to 46 in); yellowish red (5YR 5/6), coarse sandy loam, yellowish red (5YR 4/6), moist; weak medium and coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate medium subangular blocky; hard, friable; few very fine and fine roots throughout; common very fine low continuity vesicular and tubular pores; few fine low continuity vesicular and tubular pores; few medium tubular pores; few faint calcium carbonate coats on faces of peds; common fine and medium calcium carbonate threads; 5 percent rounded mixed gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary. Thickness of the BC horizon is 0 to 74 cm (0 to 29 in)

C--117 to 203 cm (46 to 80 in); reddish yellow (5YR 6/6), loamy coarse sand, yellowish red (5YR 5/6), moist; massive; slightly hard, very friable; 10 percent rounded mixed gravel; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES:
This is the Madge series in the same family. A similar soil is the Ozark series.
Madge soils: contain less than 3 percent rounded gravel in the particle-size control section.
Ozark soils: have an active family class and a perched water table at a depth of 100 to 150 cm (40 to 60 in)

Precipitation Pattern: The soil is intermittently moist in some part from April thru June, September, and October. The driest months are typically December thru February, July, and August.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
These are the Arnett, Fortyone, Madge, Quinlan, and Woodward series.
Arnett soils: occur on similar positions and have an ochric epipedon
Fortyone soils: occur on lower side slopes, have an ochric epipedon, and are coarse-loamy in the particle-size control section
Madge soils: occur on lower footslopes and contain less than 3 percent rounded gravel in the particle-size control section
Quinlan and Woodward soils: occur on lower side slopes, have an ochric epipedon and a cambic horizon, and are less than 100 cm (40 in) to sandstone

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage class: Well drained
Permeability class: moderate
Runoff: negligible on 0 to 1 percent slopes, low on 1 to 5 percent slopes, and medium on 5 to 15 percent slopes

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major uses: livestock grazing and crop production
Native vegetation: a mixed grass prairie including sideoats grama, little bluestem, blue grama, buffalograss, sand lovegrass, sand bluestem, and switchgrass
