FLEWSIE SERIES
The Flewsie series consists of very deep, well drained soils on foothills, mountain slopes and ridges. They formed in material weathered from fine-grained quartzite or quartz rich gneiss with a thick mantle of volcanic ash. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderate. Slope ranges from 5 to 90 percent. The average annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F, and the average annual precipitation is about 43 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Ashy over loamy, amorphic over isotic, frigid Typic Udivitrands
TYPICAL PEDON: Flewsie ashy silt loam, forest, on a northwest-facing slope of 45 percent at 3,560 feet elevation. When described on July 20, 1983, the soil was moist throughout. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)
Oi--0 to 1 inch; slightly decomposed needles, leaves, twigs, and bark.
Oe--1 to 3 inches; decomposed organic matter.
A--3 to 7 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) ashy silt loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; common very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 7.0); clear wavy boundary. (2 to 9 inches thick)
Bw1--7 to 18 inches; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) ashy silt loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; common very fine, fine, and few medium and coarse roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; few fine iron concretions; neutral (pH 7.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (8 to 24 inches thick)
2Bw2--18 to 27 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) fine sandy loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; few very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; many very fine irregular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.5); gradual wavy boundary. (8 to 38 inches thick)
2BC--27 to 40 inches; pale yellow (2.5Y 7/4) fine sandy loam, light olive brown (2.5Y 5/4) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky, slightly plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine irregular pores; 5 percent fine gravel; moderately acid (pH 5.8); gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 26 inches thick)
2C1--40 to 53 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) loamy fine sand, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; massive; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; many very fine irregular pores; 20 percent soft quartzite fragments; 5 percent fine gravel; moderately acid (pH 5.8); gradual wavy boundary. (6 to 18 inches thick)
2C2--53 to 63 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) loamy fine sand, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine irregular pores; 40 percent soft quartzite fragments; common yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) moist iron stains on surfaces of soft fragments; 5 percent fine gravel; moderately acid (pH 6.0).
TYPE LOCATION: Shoshone County, Idaho; about 4.5 miles east of Clarkia, about 2,200 feet east and 1,050 feet south of the northwest corner of sec. 1, T. 42 N., R. 2 E.; Latitude 47 degrees, 01 minutes, 09 seconds North; Longitude - 116 degrees, 32 minutes, 05 seconds West; USGS Emida Quadrangle.

The 2Bw, 2BC and 2C horizons contain less than 5 percent medium sand or coarser in the less than 2mm size fraction.
Soil moisture - dry, August to September (25 to 35 days); moist, mid-September through July. Udic moisture regime.
Average annual soil temperature - 39 to 46 degrees F
Average summer soil temperature - 47 to 50 degrees F with an O horizon. Frigid temperature regime.
Volcanic ash mantle - 14 to 27 inches thick
Volcanic glass content - 15 to 50 percent

COMPETING SERIES:
Dullaxe soils: have more than 20 percent medium or coarse sand
Gorhamgulch soils: have 60 to 90 percent volcanic glass and have a 2Eb horizon directly below the ash mantle
Judgetown soils are deep to a paralithic contact.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Flewsie soils are on all aspects of foothills, mountain slopes and ridges. Slopes range from 5 to 90 percent. These soils formed from fine-grained quartzite or quartz rich gneiss with a thick mantle of volcanic ash. Elevations range from 2,600 to 4,800 feet (793 to 1463 meters). The average annual air temperature ranges from 38 to 46 degrees F, and average annual precipitation is 33 to 55 inches (838 to 1397 mm). The average frost-free period is from 50 to 120 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the
Bouldercreek,
Threebear,
Keeler, and
Marblecreek soils. Bouldercreek soils are on north-facing adjacent mountain slopes and are ashy over loamy-skeletal. Threebear soils are on toeslopes and terraces, and have a fragipan. Keeler soils are on south-facing concave slopes and have an argillic horizon. Marblecreek soils are on south-facing, convex mountain slopes and are loamy-skeletal.
DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Well drained; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity in the solum and moderately rapid to rapid permeability in the substratum.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for timber production, livestock grazing, recreation, wildlife habitat, and watershed. Potential natural vegetation is mainly western hemlock, western redcedar, western white pine, grand fir, Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, and western larch, with an understory of queencup beadlily, goldthread, longtube twinflower, myrtle pachystima, bunchberry dogwood, brackenfern, starry false Solomons-seal, sidebells shinleaf, common prince's pine, common snowberry, and Oregon fairybells.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Idaho. This soil is moderately extensive. MLRA43A.
