FLORITA SERIES

The Florita series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in coarse-textured alluvium derived from sandstone and shale. Florita soils are on hills and valley sides. Slopes are 2 to 45 percent. Average annual precipitation is about 12 inches, and average annual air temperature is about 50 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, nonacid, mesic Ustic Torriorthents

TYPICAL PEDON: Florita sandy loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

COMPETING SERIES: this is the Embry (WY) series. Embry soils are slightly acid or neutral and lack carbonates within 60 inches of the surface and are dry for 60 consecutive days and 90 cumulative days between July 15 and October 25.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Florita soils are on hills and valley sides. Slope is 2 to 45 percent. The soils formed in coarse-textured alluvium derived from sandstone and shale. Elevation is 5,700 to 7,200 feet. Climate is semiarid continental. Average annual precipitation is 10 to 13 inches. Average annual temperature is 47 to 52 degrees F. Average frost-free period is 115 to 160 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Skyvillage and Atrac soils. Skyvillage soils are shallow to sandstone. Atrac soils are fine-loamy.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; moderately rapid to rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used mainly for livestock grazing and fuel wood production. Present vegetation is sideoats grama, oneseed juniper, big sagebrush, and blue grama.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern New Mexico. It is of small extent. MLRAs 35, 36 and 39.
