FUNTER SERIES

The Funter series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in fibrous peat underlain by loamy mineral materials. Funter soils occur in muskegs on floodplains and stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 41 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is about 60 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy, mixed, euic, frigid Terric Sphagnofibrists
Sphagnofibrists

TYPICAL PEDON: Funter peat - on a level muskeg under native vegetation of sphagnum moss. (All colors are for moist soil).

0i1--0 to 18 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) sphagnum peat, very pale brown (10YR 7/4) when pressed; 90 percent fiber, 75 percent rubbed; about 80 percent sphagnum moss fibers and 20 percent sedge; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 18 inches thick)

0i2--18 to 24 inches; dark brown (10 YR 4/3) peat, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) when pressed; 85 percent fiber, 75 percent rubbed; about 75 percent sphagnum moss fibers and 25 percent sedge; clear smooth boundary. (6 to 32 inches thick)

2Cg--24 to 60 inches; dark greenish gray (5GY 4/1) silt; massive; slightly sticky, nonplastic; medium acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Juneau Area, Alaska. NE1/4 SE1/4, Sec. 2, T39S, R64E, Copper River Meridian.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to mineral soil ranges from 24 to 63 inches. Depth to water table ranges from the surface to 10 inches. The soils may be interlayered with thin strata of hemic or sapric material, or mineral soil. Reaction of the profile ranges from extremely acid to medium acid. The pH (0.01 M Calcium Chloride) is 4.5 or more in at least some part of the organic materials in the control section.

The surface tier has hue from 5YR to 2.5Y, value moist from 2 to 6, and chroma moist from 2 to 5. Rubbed and pressed colors may vary by an increase or decrease of one unit in value or chroma. Fiber content ranges from 90 to 100 percent unrubbed, 75 to 90 percent rubbed. The organic material is primarily slightly decomposed sphagnum moss, along with sedges and equisetum stems.

The subsurface tier has a hue of 7.5YR, 10YR, 2.5Y, 5Y, or 5GY, value moist of 3 to 7, and chroma moist of 4 or less. Rubbed and pressed colors may vary by an increase or decrease of one unit in value or chroma. Fiber content ranges from 85 to 100 percent unrubbed, 75 to 95 percent rubbed. The organic material is primarily slightly decomposed coarse sphagnum moss, along with sedges, and equisetum stems.

Texture of the 2C horizon is silt, silt loam, or sandy loam. Coarse fragments range from 0 to 30 percent, with 0 to 10 percent cobbles, and 0 to 20 percent gravel.

COMPETING SERIES: These include the Clunie, Doroshin, and Kogish series. The Clunie soils consists of fibric sedge peat over tidal deposits. The Doroshin soils consist of hemic material over a silty substratum. The Kogish soils lack mineral material within the control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Funter soils occur in muskegs on floodplains and stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 5 percent. The soils formed in fibrous peat underlain by loamy mineral material. Elevation ranges from 0 to 1000 feet. The climate is humid maritime with the average annual precipitation ranging from 21 to 100 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 40 to 45 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Ashmun, Chilkoot, Hollow, Lutak, Skagway, and Tsirku soils. Ashmun, Chilkoot, Hollow, Skagway and Tsirku soils occur on floodplains and are developed in sand and gravel alluvium. Lutak soils occur on terraces, have spodic horizons, and are shallow over sand and gravel.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained with water at or near the surface. Very slow runoff. Permeability is assumed to be rapid in the organic material and moderate in the underlying mineral soil.

USE AND VEGETATION: The vegetation consists mainly of sphagnum moss, water sedge, and equisetum. In some areas lodgepole pine is found. The soils are used mainly for wildlife.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern Alaska. The series is of minor extent.
