FREEBOARD SERIES



The Freeboard series consists of deep moderately well drained soils that formed in andesite and volcanic rock residuum. Freeboard soils are on side slopes of interfluves of hills and mountains on islands. The mean annual precipitation is about 355 millimeters (14 inches) and the mean annual temperature is about 21 degrees C (69 degrees F). Slopes range from 5 to 65 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, thermic Vertic Haploxeralfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Freeboard clay loam, on a west facing 33 percent slope under a cover of annual and perennial grass, near scattered lemonade berry and sage at an elevation of 1178 feet, (389 m). (Colors are for dry soil and on the broken face of the ped unless otherwise noted).

A1--0 to 0 inches, (0 to 1 cm); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; 32 percent clay; moderate medium granular and moderate thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; common very fine roots throughout; common fine moderate continuity interstitial and common fine moderate continuity irregular pores; 5 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; slightly acid, pH 6.4 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride; abrupt wavy boundary. (1 to 20 centimeters thick)

A2--0 to 5 inches, (1 to 13 cm); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; 40 percent clay; moderate fine subangular blocky and moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky, moderately plastic; common fine roots throughout and common very fine roots throughout; common fine moderate continuity interstitial and common fine moderate continuity irregular and common very fine low continuity tubular pores; 10 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; neutral, pH 6.7 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride clear wavy boundary. (0 to 18 centimeters thick)

Bt1--5 to 11 inches, (13 to 28 cm); dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) clay loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; 39 percent clay; strong coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine roots throughout; common fine moderate continuity interstitial and common fine moderate continuity irregular and common very fine low continuity tubular pores; continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on rock fragments and continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; 10 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; neutral, pH 6.9 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride clear wavy boundary. (31 to 70 centimeters thick)

Bt2--11 to 24 inches, (28 to 60 cm); 40 percent dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) and 60 percent brown (7.5YR 4/3) clay loam, 40 percent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and 60 percent dark brown (7.5YR 3/3) moist; 30 percent clay; moderate coarse prismatic and strong coarse angular blocky structure; very hard, firm, moderately sticky, very plastic; common very fine roots throughout; common very fine low continuity tubular pores; continuous distinct brown (7.5YR 4/3), moist, clay films on rock fragments and continuous distinct brown (7.5YR 4/3), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; neutral, pH 7.0 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride; abrupt wavy boundary. Btk1--24 to 35 inches, (60 to 90 cm); 40 percent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and 60 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) gravelly sandy clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) rubbed moist; 22 percent clay; moderate coarse prismatic and strong coarse angular blocky structure; very hard, firm, moderately sticky, very plastic; common very fine low continuity interstitial and common very fine low continuity tubular pores; 85 percent continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on rock fragments and 85 percent continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; 3 percent fine faint irregular light gray (10YR 7/2), dry, carbonate masses with clear boundaries in matrix; 15 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; slight effervescence, by HCl, 1 normal; moderately alkaline, pH 7.9 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride; gradual wavy boundary. Btk2--35 to 51 inches, (90 to 130 cm); 40 percent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) and 60 percent yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) very gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) rubbed moist; 16 percent clay; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, friable, moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine low continuity interstitial pores; 85 percent continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on rock fragments and 85 percent continuous prominent very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist, clay films on all faces of peds; 5 percent fine distinct irregular light gray (10YR 7/2), dry, carbonate masses with clear boundaries in matrix and 3 percent fine faint irregular light gray (10YR 7/2), dry, carbonate masses with clear boundaries around rock fragments; 30 percent rounded 2 to 5 millimeter and 50 percent rounded 2 to 75 millimeter gravel; slight effervescence, by HCl, 1 normal; moderately alkaline, pH 8.1 by pH meter 1:2 calcium chloride; clear wavy boundary. (0 to 40 centimeters thick)

Cr--51 to 61 inches, (130 to 155 cm); strongly cemented andesite, fractured less than 10cm apart, loose and augerable.

TYPE LOCATION: Los Angeles County, California, 33 degrees, 22 minutes, 14.2 seconds North latitude and 118 degrees, 22 minutes, 54.1 seconds West longitude, NAD83 - U.S.G.S Quad: Santa Catalina East.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 15 to 22 degrees C. (59 to 71 degrees F.) The soil moisture control section is dry in all parts from about mid-June to mid-November and is usually moist the rest of the time.

The A horizon dry color is 10YR 5/2, 4/2, 3/3, Moist color is 10YR 3/2, 2/2, 7.5YR 3/2.
Textures are loam, silty clay loam, clay loam.
Clay percentage ranges from 20 to 40 percent.
Rock fragments range from 0 to 10.

The Bt or Bss horizon dry color is 10YR 3/2, 3/3, 7.5YR 4/2. Moist color is 10YR 3/1, 2/2, 7.5YR 3/2.
Textures are silty clay loam, clay loam, clay.
Clay percentage ranges from 30 to 45 percent.
Rock fragments range from 0 to 10.


The BC or Btk horizon dry color is 10YR 5/4, 3/2, , 2.5Y 6/1, 5/2. Moist color is 10YR 3/3, 2.5YR 5/2, 2/2.
Textures are gravely sandy loam, very gravely sandy loam, clay loam, gravely clay loam, gravely sandy clay loam.
Clay percentage ranges from 16 to 25 percent.
Rock fragments range from 10 to 50.

The LEP for this soil ranges from 6 to 9.
Vertical cracks in this soil range from faint to prominent (2mm by 5cm to 2cm by 30cm) from the soil surface to a depth of 150cm.
Slickensides and wedge shaped aggregates are faint and few throughout profiles.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Narbaitz soils. Narbaitz soils were formed on erosional fan remnants with gilgai relief and typically have dry color chromas of 4 or higher.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Freeboard soils formed in andesite and volcanic rock on side slopes of interfluves of hills and mountains. Slopes range from 5 to 65 percent. Elevations are from 100 to 1550 feet (30 to 472 meters). The climate is characterized by warm, dry summers and cool, moist winters with potential fog common all year. The mean annual precipitation is 13 to 24 inches (330 to 660 mm), the mean annual temperature is 61 to 73 degrees F. (16 to 23 degrees C.), and the frost free season is 355 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Luff, Purser, Starboard, Starbright, Halyard, Tongva soils. Luff soils have a coarse-loamy surface texture and an abrupt textural change. Purser soils are have a lithic contact within 50 cm. Starboard and Starbright soils are mesic and isomesic under oaks and other large shrubs. Halyard soils are moderately deep and have an LEP less then 6. Tongva soils are moderately deep and fine-loamy. All these soils are found on hills and mountains.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: moderately well drained; moderately high runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Wildlife habitat, recreation and building site development. Vegetation is perennial and annual grasses, sage, Lemonade bush, and cactus, Non-native Scrub and Coastal Sage Scrub.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Santa Catalina Island, Los Angeles County, California. The soil is not extensive. MLRA 20 Southern California Mountains.
