GADONA SERIES
The Gadona series consists of well drained soils formed in clayey lacustrine deposits on lacustrine terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 20 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 26 degrees F. and the mean annual precipitation is
about 16 inches.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, superactive Typic Haplocryepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Gadona silty clay on a 7 percent slope under white spruce forest at 2475 feet elevation. (All colors are for moist soil)
Oi--1 inches to 0; peat; undecomposed mat of moss, roots, leaves, and other litter; abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)
C1--0 to 11 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay; strong coarse granular structure; friable, very sticky and very plastic; few fine distinct dark greenish gray (5GY 4/1) redox depletions and few fine distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) redox concentrations; few fine and fine roots; moderately acid (pH 6.0); clear smooth boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick)
C2--11 to 43 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay; strong coarse granular structure; friable, very sticky and very plastic; slightly acid (pH 6.4); gradual smooth boundary. (14 to 30 inches thick)
C3--43 to 60 inches; dark grayish brown (2.5Y 4/2) silty clay; strong fine subangular blocky structure; friable, very sticky and very plastic; weakly effervescent and increasing with depth; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6).
TYPE LOCATION: Gulkana River Area, main stem, Alaska; about 16 miles north of Sourdough; the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of section 4, T.11N., R.2W., Copper River Meridian.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 32 to 35 degrees F. There is more than 35 percent clay by weighted average in the particle size
control section. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to moderately alkaline.
The A horizon (when present) has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR; value moist of 2 or 3; and chroma moist of 1 through 3. Texture is silt loam, mucky silt loam, or silt. Reaction is moderately acid or slightly acid.
The C or 2C horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y; value moist of 4 or 5; and chroma moist of 1 or 2. Texture is silty clay or clay with occasional pockets and lenses of silty clay loam and clay loam; Rock fragments range from 0 to 25 percent with 0 to 20 percent gravel and 0 to 10 percent cobble; Slight to strong effervescences in the lower horizons of some pedons. The reaction is mildly acid to moderately alkaline.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no series in the same family.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gadona soils formed in clayey lacustrine deposits on lacustrine terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 20 percent. The climate is subarctic continental with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 14 to 18 inches. The mean annual temperature ranges from 23 to 27 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Gadona soils are well drained. Runoff is slow to rapid. Permeability is moderate.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Gadona soils have native vegetation of white spruce forest. The successional state of the vegetation is a given area is closely related to the fire history. The soil is used primarily for recreation and wildlife habitat.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Copper River Basin, Alaska. The series is extensive.
SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: WASILLA, ALASKA

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon include: no diagnostic horizons; cryic temperature regime; fine particle size class from 10 to 40 inches Formerly clasified as Cryochrepts.
