GARVEN SERIES
The Garven series consists of shallow, well drained, moderately slow permeable soils formed in residuum derived from limestone of the Buda Formation. These nearly level soils occur on shoulders and summits of interfluves on ridges of dissected plateaus. Slope ranges from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 762 mm (30 in), and mean annual air temperature is about 18.3 degrees C (65 degrees F).
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, thermic, shallow Entic Haplustolls
TYPICAL PEDON: Garven clay, 1 percent slope in rangeland; elevation is 725 m (2379 ft) (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)
A--0 to 10 cm (0 to 4 in); clay, very dark brown (10YR 2/2), moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine subangular blocky; moderately hard, firm, very sticky, very plastic; common fine roots throughout; 5 percent nonflat subangular indurated 2 to 75-mm limestone fragments; slightly alkaline; clear smooth boundary. (Thickness is 7 to 20 cm [3 to 8 in].)
Bw--10 to 33 cm (4 to 13 in); clay, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2), moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, firm, very sticky, very plastic; common very fine roots throughout and common fine roots throughout; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. (Thickness is 13 to 41 cm [5 to 16 in].)
Cr--33 to 100 cm (13 to 40 in); moderately cemented paralithic limestone; moderately alkaline
TYPE LOCATION: Kerr County, TX; from the intersection of Interstate 10 and State Highway 41 about 23.4 miles southwest on State Highway 41 to private ranch road; 1 mile southwest on private ranch road; 0.2 miles southwest in rangeland.
