C2--167 to 192 centimeters; light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) exterior, loamy sand; massive; very friable, soft, nonsticky, nonplastic; slightly acid; clear wavy boundary. (Combined C horizons are 10 to 60 centimeters thick)

2C3--192 to 200 centimeters; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) exterior, sandy loam; massive; friable, slightly hard, slightly sticky, slightly plastic; 10 percent fine distinct irregular brown (7.5YR 4/4), iron-manganese masses throughout and 25 percent fine distinct irregular gray (10YR 5/1), iron-manganese masses throughout; slightly acid.

COMPETING SERIES: These are Chelsea, Coloma, Colonie, Lakin, and Millrock soils.
Chelsea soils have greater than 50 percent fine sands.
Coloma soils show greater soil development (Bw horizons).
Colonie soils allow for free carbonates the lower in the profile.
Lakin soils are more acidic throughout the profile.
Millrock have coarse fragments in the profile.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Parent material: sandy and loamy eolian material
Landform: back slopes and shoulders on uplands
Slopes: 3 to 10 percent
Mean annual air temperature: 11 to 13 degrees C.
Mean annual precipitation: 86 to 102 centimeters.
Frost-free period: 170 to 190 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Falleaf (p), Gymer, Morrill, Olmitz, Sharpsburg, and Welda soils.
The Falleaf (p) soil have an argillic horizon and occur on similar landscape positions.
The Gymer soils formed in Loveland age loess and silty alluvium on stream terraces.
The Morrill soils have a mollic epipedon.
Olmitz soils have a cumulic horizon and are on footslopes.
Sharpsburg soils have a mollic epipedon and occur on summits of uplands.
Welda soils formed in silty sediments and occur on summits of uplands.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: well
Runoff: very slow
Saturated hydraulic conductivity: very high

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for both growing cultivated crops and pasture. Principal crops grown are corn, soybeans, small grains, and hay. Native vegetation was tall prairie grasses and savanna oak forest.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: LRR M, MLRA 106, 107B. Northeastern Kansas. This series is of small extent.

SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (SSRO) RESPONSIBLE: Salina, Kansas

SERIES PROPOSED: Douglas County, Kansas, Stranger Creek Watershed Project, 2007.

REMARKS:
Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Particle-size control section: The zone from 25 to 100 centimeters.
Ochric epipedon: The zone from 0 to 50 centimeters (A1, A2 and AB horizons).
Lamellae subgroup: Lamellae within 200 centimeters of the soil surface. (E and Bt1 and E and Bt2 horizons).
Redoximorphic features: In the zone from 192 centimeters to 210 centimeters (2C3 horizon).
Top two horizons meet mollic colors; however, it lacks the organic carbon to meet mollic criteria.

This soil was formerly included with the Thurman series. The Thurman series has an ustic moisture regime.
