GUADALUPE SERIES


The Guadalupe series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils that formed in sandy and loamy alluvium of Holocene age. These soils occur on nearly level to very gently sloping floodplains. SThe slope range is 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 520 mm (21 in) and the mean annual air temperature is about 15 degrees C (59 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Torrifluventic Haplustepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Guadalupe fine sandy loam, on a 0.5 percent linear slope, on a floodplain, in pastureland (cropland returned to pasture) at an elevation of about 713 meters (2,340 ft). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 13 cm (0 to 5 in); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.

A--13 to 30 cm (0 to 12 in); grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; weak very fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; common medium to fine pores; common wormcasts; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. Combined thickness of the A horizons is 7 to 33 cm (3 to 13 in)

Bw--30 to 63 cm (12 to 25 in); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) fine sandy loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable; few wormcasts; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary. Combined thickness of the Bw horizons is 0 to 123 cm (0 to 48 in)

Bk1--63 to 76 cm (25 to 30 in); very pale brown (10YR 7/3) fine sandy loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable; common fine and medium pores; common wormcasts; few films and filaments of calcium carbonate; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; clear smooth boundary.

Bk2--76 to 97 cm (30 to 38 in); very pale brown (10YR 7/4) sandy clay loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable; few thin strata of fine sandy loam; few very fine to medium pores; few wormcasts; few films and filaments of calcium carbonate; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. Combined thickness of the Bk horizons is 0 to 180 cm (0 to 71 in)

C1--97 to 114 cm (38 to 45 in); very pale brown (10YR 7/4) loamy fine sand, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; single grained; loose; few strata of fine sandy loam; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual smooth boundary.

C2--114 to 203 cm (45 to 80 in); very pale brown (10YR 8/4) loamy fine sand, very pale brown (10YR 7/4) moist; common distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) iron stains in the matrix; single grained; loose; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Hemphill County Texas; from the intersection of US Hwy 60 and Birch Street in Canadian, TX; about 0.8 miles west on birch street to the intersection of Birch Street and County Road I; 150 ft (45 m) north into pasture.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: An ustic moisture regime bordering on aridic. The soil moisture control section is dry in some or all parts for more than 180 but less than 220 days, cumulative, in normal years. July through August and December through February are the driest months. These soils are intermittently moist in September through November and March through June.

Thickness of ochric epipedon: 7 to 33 cm (3 to 13 in)
Depth to secondary calcium carbonate: 10 to 91 cm (4 to 36 in)

Reaction (pH): slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline (7.4-8.4)

C, Ck, BC, and BCk, horizons (where present):
Hue: 5YR to 10YR
Value: 5 to 8, 4 to 7 moist
Chroma: 2 to 6 moist or dry
Texture: sand, loamy fine sand, loamy sand, fine sandy loam, sandy loam, loam, or sandy clay loam and their and their gravelly counterparts. Stratification and bedding planes are common.
Coarse fragments: 0 to 25 percent; fine to coarse gravels; indurated well-rounded quartzite, feldspar, ironstone, and sandstone
Identifiable calcium carbonate: 0 to 3 percent; very fine or fine; films, filaments, masses, nodules or finely disseminated carbonate
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 0 to 4 percent
Effervescence: none to violent
Reaction (pH): slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline (7.4-8.4)

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series. Similar soils include the Dalupe(TX), Hawley(OK), Westola(OK), and Yahola(OK) soils.
Dalupe soils: have a cooler mesic soil temperature regime
Hawley, Westola, and Yahola soils: are moist in the soil moisture control section for longer periods

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bippus, Krier, Persimmon, Sprone, Sweetwater, Touzalin, and Wespur series on similar landscape positions.

Bippus, Sprone, and Wespur soils: have a mollic epipedon, and a fine-loamy particle size control section
Krier soils: have a sandy particle-size class, seasonal endosaturation within 30 to 91 cm (12 to 36 in) of the soil surface, and a slightly to moderately saline loamy surface layer
Persimmon soils: have seasonal endosaturation within 100 cm (40 in) of the soil surface
Sweetwater soils: have a mollic epipedon, a fine-loamy over sandy strongly contrasting particle-size class; and endosaturation within 100 cm (40 in) of the soil surface
Touzalin soils: have a sandy particle-size class, and seasonal endosaturation within 100 cm (40 in) of soil surface

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY:
Drainage: well drained
Permeability: moderately rapid
Runoff: negligible on 0 to 2 percent slopes
Flooding: frequent to rare; extremely brief to very brief duration during the spring and summer months

USE AND VEGETATION:
Major use: livestock grazing and cropland
Native vegetation: Climax state is dominated by tall and mid-grasses of switchgrass, Indiangrass, little bluestem, sideouts grama, sand bluestem, and blue grama. Sand sagebrush is the major shrub species along with small amounts of yucca, Chickasaw sandplum, and skunkbush sumac. Cottonwood is the most prevalent tree species.
Crops: wheat, grain sorghum, and forage sorghum.
