Type Location: Morgan County, Utah; about 10 miles north ant 4 miles east of Lost Creek Dam; 2,800 feet east and 2,000 feet south of NW corner of sec 19, T 7N., R 6E
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The Al horizon has moist value of less than 3.5 throughout the upper 4 inches and chromas of 4 or more at depths of 2 to 8 inches. The combined thickness of the Al, B2t, and B3ca ranges from 50 to 60 inches or more over bedrock. The mean annual soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches ranges from 41 to 43 degrees F. The mean summer temperature range from 59 to 65 degrees F. The soils are usually moist but are dry for 50 to 65 consecutive days during the later part of the summer. Gravel content ranges from 0 to 110 percent in the A1 and B2t horizons and 0 to 30 percent in the B3ca horizon.
The Al horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 2 through 6 dry, 2 through 4 moist. It ranges from loam or light clay loam to sandy loam. This horizon is slightly acid or neutral and ranges from 2 to 8 inches thick
The B2t horizon has hue of 2.5YR or 5YR, value of 4 through 6 dry, 2 through 4 moist, and chroma of 4 through 6 dry and moist. It ranges from heavy silty clay loam to clay loam and has 35 to 40 percent clay in the upper 20 inches. Structure ranges from weak medium prismatic to weak to strong, coarse subangular blocky or angular block. This horizon is slightly acid to moderately alkaline and ranges from 30 to 45 inches thick.
The B3ca horizon has hue of 2.5YR or 5YR, value of 4 through 6 dry, 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 4 through 8 dry, 4 through 6 moist. It is loam, silty clay loam, clay loam, gravelly loam or gravelly clay loam. This horizon is moderately or strongly calcareous.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Mineral Mountain and Morgala series. Mineral Mountain and Morgala soils have montmorillontic mineralogy. Also, Mineral Mountain soils occur in the 14 to 16 inch precipitation zone.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Guilder soils are at elevations of 6,400 t 8,000 feet. They occur on north-facing mountain slopes foothills and alluvial fans. Slopes are 3 to 25 percent. These soils formed in residuum and alluvium weathered from sandstone and shale. The climate is moist subhumid, and the average annual precipitation ranges from 16 to 20 inches. The mean annual temperature is 35 to 41 degrees F. The mean summer temperature is 56 to 62 degrees F., and the frost-free period ranges from 70 to 90 days.
ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bullenel, Etchen, Ercan, Redcan, St. Marys, and Yeljack soils. Bullnel soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock, have less than 35 percent clay and have 20 to 35 percent gravel in the argillic horizon. Etchen soils are 20 to 40 inches deep to bedrock, and have loamy-skeletal argillic horizons. Redcan soils are less than 20 inches deep to bedrock and lack argillic horizons. St. Marys soils have mollic epipedons and lack argillic horizons. Yeljack soils have mollic epipedons, A2 horizons and less than 35 percent clay in the argillic horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils used for watershed, range and wildlife habitat. The present native vegetation is snowberry, Columbia needlegrass, native bluegrass, bluebunch wheatgrass, serviceberry, bitterbrush, balsamroot, and slender wheatgrass.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northern Utah. This series is inextensive .
