TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, active, nonacid, frigid Histic Humaquepts
TYPICAL PEDON: Gutport muck on a slope of 1 percent in a forested area. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)
Oi--0 to 1 inch; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) broken face, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) rubbed fibric material; about 95 percent fiber, 90 percent rubbed; massive; primarily sphagnum moss fibers; slightly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)
Oa--1 to 13 inches; black (N 2/0) broken face and rubbed sapric material, about 10 percent fiber, 5 percent rubbed; weak medium granular structure; friable; many fine to coarse roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (8 to 14 inches thick)
Bg--13 to 16 inches; dark gray (5Y 4/1) silt loam; weak medium granular structure; friable; many fine to coarse roots; neutral; abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)
Cg--16 to 17 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay loam; massive; friable; many fine to coarse roots; mildly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.
C--17 to 27 inches; varved reddish brown (5YR 5/4) and pinkish gray (5YR 6/2) silty clay; many medium and coarse prominent strong brown (7.5YR 4/6), distinct brown (7.5YR 5/4) and prominent greenish gray (5GY 6/1) mottles; massive; firm; few fine to coarse roots; slight effervescence; mildly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.
2R--27 inches; limestone bedrock.
TYPE LOCATION: Chippewa County, Michigan; on Drummond Island, 2100 feet west and 200 feet south of the northeast corner of sec. 32, T. 43 N., R. 6 E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The depth to the mineral material ranges from 9 to 15 inches and the depth to bedrock dominantly is 20 to 30 inches, but ranges to 40 inches. Reaction of the organic material is slightly acid or neutral and the mineral material is neutral or mildly alkaline.
The Oi horizon has hue of 5YR to 10YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 3 or 4.
The Oa horizon has hue of 7.5YR, 10YR or is neutral, value of 2 or 3 and chroma of 0 or 1.
The Bg and Cg horizons have hue of 5Y, 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 4 or 5 and chroma of 1 or 2. They are silt loam, silty clay loam or clay. The C horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 5YR, value of 4 to 6 and chroma of 2 to 6. It is silty clay or clay.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family. Closely related is the Dora Series. Dora series have organic materials deeper than 16 inches and are not underlain by bedrock.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gutport soils are in depressions on lake plains. These soils formed in organic deposits, 9 to 15 inches thick over clayey deposits underlain by limestone bedrock. Slope gradients range from 0 to 2 percent. The mean annual precipitation ranges from about 28 to 35 inches, and the mean annual temperature ranges from 41 to 45 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Chippeny, Ensign and Ruse soils. Chippeny soils have 16 or more inches of organic material over bedrock and are on similar landscape positions. The somewhat poorly drained Ensign and poorly drained Ruse soils formed in loamy material 10 to 20 inches thick over bedrock. Ensign soils are on slightly higher landscape positions, and the Ruse soils are on similar landscape positions.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Surface runoff is very slow or ponded. Permeability is moderately slow to moderately rapid in the organic material and slow in the clayey material.
USE AND VEGETATION: Most all areas of this soil are wooded with northern whitecedar, black ash, balsam poplar, balsam fir and quaking aspen being the primary species.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The series is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Chippewa County, Michigan, 1989.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are: histic epipedon - the zone from the surface to 13 inches (Oi and Oa horizons); cambic horizon - the zone from 13 to 16 inches (Bg horizon); aquic soil moisture regime.
