HAGGARD SERIES

The Haggard series consists of shallow to moderately deep over permafrost, very poorly drained soils formed in organic materials over stratified loamy alluvium. Haggard soils are on stream terraces. Slopes range from 0 to 4 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 26 degrees F., and the average annual precipitation is about 16 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Mixed, euic, subgelic Fluvaquentic Hemistels

TYPICAL PEDON: Haggard peat on a 3 percent slope under ericaceous shrub and sedge tussocks at 1900 feet elevation. (All colors are for moist soil)

Oi1--0 to 7 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4, squeezed) peat; slightly decomposed organic fibers; about 95 percent fibers unrubbed, 90 percent fibers rubbed; many very fine, fine, and medium roots; moderately acid (pH 6.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 8 inches)

Oe2--7 to 12 inches; black (10YR 2/1, squeezed) mucky peat; partially decomposed organic fibers; about 85 percent fibers unrubbed, 35 percent fibers rubbed; few very fine, fine, and medium roots; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt wavy boundary. (4 to 26 inches thick)

Oe/Cg--12 to 20 inches; very dark brown mucky peat and very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) loamy fine sand; organic portion has about 85 percent fibers unrubbed, 35 percent fibers rubbed; massive; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 22 inches thick)

Oeb--20 to 24 inches; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) mucky peat; about 85 percent fibers unrubbed, 70 percent fibers rubbed; slightly acid (pH 6.4); abrupt smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

Cgf--24 to 34 inches; dark greenish gray (5GY 4/1) stratified sand, fine sand and silt loam; reduced matrix; neutral (pH 6.8). Frozen on September 13, 1992.

TYPE LOCATION: Gulkana River Area, Alaska; about 2 miles northwest of Sourdough; the NW1/4 of the NE1/4 of section 23, T.9N., R.2W., Copper River Meridian.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The organic mat ranges from 16 to 34 inches thick. The water table is at or near the surface from May through September. The surface tier is partially decomposed moss and sedge peat with between one-sixth and three-fourths fibers after rubbing. The pH (0.01M CaCl2) is 4.5 or greater within parts of the control section. The mineral soil matrix is reduced. Permafrost occurs at 11 to 38 inches. Reaction ranges from moderately acid to neutral.

The O and O part of the O/C horizons have hue of 2.5YR, 5YR, 7.5YR or 10YR; value moist of 2.5, 2, or 3; chroma moist of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6.

The Cg and Cg part of the O/Cg horizons have hue of 2.5Y, 5Y, 5GY or 5G; value moist of 3, 4 or 5; chroma moist of 1 or 2.

COMPETING SERIES: These are Wrangell and Bolio series. Wrangell soils have clayey mineral textures. Bolio series have pH values less than 4.5 (0.01 M CACL2).
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Haggard soils are on stream terraces. The soils formed in sedge peat, moss and ericaceous shrub litter over stratified loamy alluvial sediments. The climate is subarctic continental with an average annual precipitation of about 16 inches. Mean annual temperature is 26 degrees F. Slopes range from 0 to 4 percent.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained. Ponded to very slow runoff. Permeability is rapid in the organic materials, moderate in the mineral underlying material and impermeable in the permafrost.

USE AND VEGETATION: The Hufman soils are used as wildlife habitat. The native vegetation is dominantly low ericaceous shrub and tussock tundra.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southcentral Alaska. The series is of minor extent.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Gulkana River Area, Alaska. 1999.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this profile include: organic material from 0 to 24 inches; mineral material from 24 to 34 inches with less than 18 percent clay; a reduced matrix is present from 24 to 60 inches; pH of the organic materials that is 4.5 (0.01M CaCl) or greater in all parts of the control section; permafrost is present at 34 inches. Formerly classified as Pergelic Cryohemist.
