TYPE LOCATION: Salt Lake County, Utah; about 2 1/2 miles north and 1 1/4 miles west of Bluffdale, Utah; about 13600 South and 480 West Street; 1,100 feet south and 500 feet west of the NE corner of sec. 6, T.4S., R.1W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The particle-size control section ranges from 18 to 35 percent clay with less than 15 percent material coarser than very fine sand. Depth to the calcic is less than 40 inches.
Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 47 to 54 degrees F., and mean summer soil temperature ranges from 65 to 75 degrees F. The moisture control section is moist in some part more than half the time, cumulative, that the soil temperature at a depth of 20 inches is higher than 41 degrees F.
The A horizon has hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 or 6 dry, and 3 or 4 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3.
The Bk and Ck horizons have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 6 or 7 dry, 3 to 6 moist, and chroma of 2 or 3. Texture is silt loam or silty clay loam.
COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hans soils are on nearly level to gently sloping lake terraces. The soils formed in calcareous lake sediments from mixed rocks. Slopes are 0 to 6 percent. The climate is dry subhumid. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 13 to 17 inches. Mean annual air temperature ranges from 46 to 48 degrees F. and the mean summer temperature is 65 to 80 degrees F. Freeze-free period is about 120 to 180 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bingham and Red Rock soils. Bingham soils have mollic epipedons and gravelly argillic horizons, Red Rock soils have mollic epipedons more than 20 inches thick and lack B horizons.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well-drained; slow to rapid runoff; slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used principally for irrigated and nonirrigated cropland. The native vegetation was bunchgrasses, western wheatgrass, and brush.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils occur in the northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. The series is inextensive. MLRA 28A.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Phoenix, Arizona
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Salt Lake County, (Salt Lake Area), Utah, 1972.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - the zone from 0 to 7 inches (Ap horizon)
Cambic horizon - the zone from 7 to 14 inches (Bw horizon).
Calcic horizon - the zone from 14 to 34 inches (Bk and Ck horizons which is based on the original 1968 horizon designations of Bca and Cca).
The classification is based on the "Keys to Soil Taxonomy, Eighth Edition, 1998".
