HATCH SERIES

The Hatch series consists of moderately deep, well drained, slowly permeable soils that formed in material weathered from shale and siltstone on mountainsides and benches. Slopes range from 5 to 60 percent. The average annual precipitation is about 22 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 40 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic Ustic Haplocryalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Hatch loam--woodland. (Colors are for air dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

01--1/2 inch to 0; conifer needles and twigs.

A--0 to 2 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; moderate thin platy structure parting to weak fine granular; slightly hard, very friable, common very fine and few fine and medium roots; few very fine pores; neutral (pH 6.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Bt--2 to 9 inches; red (2.5YR 5/6) clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/8) moist; moderate medium angular blocky structure parting to moderate fine angular blocky; very hard, very firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine, fine, and medium and few coarse roots; few fine pores; many thin clay films on faces of peds; 5 percent fine pebbles; neutral (pH 6.6); clear smooth boundary. (6 to 14 inches thick)

Btk--9 to 23 inches; red (2.5YR 5/6) silty clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) moist; moderate coarse angular blocky structure parting to moderate medium angular blocky; very hard, firm, slightly sticky and plastic; common very fine, fine and medium and few coarse roots; few fine pores; common thin clay films on faces of peds; 5 percent fine pebbles; strongly calcareous; carbonates are segregated as veins and filaments; neutral (pH 7.3); clear smooth boundary. (6 to 20 inches thick)

Ck--23 to 36 inches; red (2.5YR 5/6) silt loam, red (2.5YR 5/8) moist; massive; very hard, firm, slightly sticky and plastic; few very fine, fine, medium and coarse roots; common very fine pores; 5 percent fine pebbles; strongly calcareous; carbonates are disseminated; mildly alkaline (pH 7.5); clear smooth boundary. (12 to 18 inches thick)

Cr--36 inches; siltstone (or shale).

TYPE LOCATION: Kane County, Utah; Crawford Creek (near rain gauge) SW 1/4 SW 1/4 sec. 35, T. 38 S., R. 4 1/2 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to weathered siltstone or shale is 20 to 40 inches. The mean annual soil temperature is about 36 to 42 degrees F. and the mean summer soil temperature at depth of 20 inches is about 54 to 58 degrees F. The soil is usually moist in some part between a depth of 4 and 12 inches. The upper 6 inches, after mixing, has a color value, moist, of less than 4. The A horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, value of 3 to 6 dry, 2 or 3 moist and chroma of 2 to 4.

The B horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 4 to 6. It is silty clay loam, clay loam or clay and has 35 to 45 percent clay.

The C horizon has hue of 2.5YR to 7.5YR, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 4 to 8. It ranges from silt loam or gravelly silt loam to silty clay or gravelly silty clay.
The Cr horizon is weathered shale or siltstone.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Brabus (T), Chedsey, Cramont (T), Goldhill (T), Harkness, Herd, Pagosa, and Stovho series. Brabus (T), Cramont (T), Goldhill (T), Harkness, Herd, Pagosa, and Stovho soils have bedrock deeper than 40 inches. Chedsey soils have an E horizon, the depth to the top of the argilic is 13 to 20 inches, and less than 50 percent silt in the particle size control section.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hatch soils are on mountainsides and benches below flat topped mesas. They formed in colluvium and residuum from shale or siltstone. Slope gradients are 5 to 60 percent. Elevations range from 7,700 to 9,300 feet. The average annual precipitation is 17 to 25 inches and the freeze-free period ranges from 60 to 75 days. The mean annual temperature is 36 to 42 degrees F. and the average summer temperature is 54 to 58 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHIC ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Pahreah, Sielo, Swapps and Sevier soils. Pahreah soils have over 35 percent rock fragments in the particle size control section and lack an argillic horizon. Sielo soils are over 40 inches to bedrock. Swapps soils are fine-loamy. Sevier soils are 15 to 20 inches deep to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: The Hatch soils are used for timber production, recreation and wildlife habitat. The native vegetation is aspen, white fir, limber pine, snowberry, Oregon grape, peavine and grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: These soils are in the south-central part of Utah. They are inextensive.
