HENDRIE SERIES

The Hendrie series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils formed in loamy glaciolacustrine deposits. These soils are on lake plains. Permeability is moderately slow. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 32 inches. Mean annual temperature is about 42 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: coarse-silty, mixed, superactive, nonacid, frigid Aeric Endoaquepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Hendrie mucky peat in a forested area at an elevation of 715 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated)

Oe--0 to 4 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) mucky peat; massive; friable; many fine to coarse roots; very strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Eg--4 to 7 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silt loam, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine to coarse roots; few medium distinct dark gray (10YR 4/1) iron depletions and few medium prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) masses of iron accumulation; strongly acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

Bw--7 to 16 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/4) silt loam; moderate medium platy structure; friable; few fine to coarse roots; common medium distinct strong brown (7.5YR 4/6) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; neutral; clear wavy boundary. (8 to 12 inches thick)

C1--16 to 48 inches; pinkish gray (7.5YR 6/2) silt loam; massive; firm; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. (25 to 35 inches thick)

C2--48 to 80 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam; massive parting to weak thin platy structure inherent from deposition; firm; common medium distinct yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Luce County, Michigan; 275 feet east and 1400 feet north of the southwest corner of sec. 9, T.46N.,R.8W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The depth of the solum and depth to carbonates ranges from 15 to 25 inches.

The Oe horizon has a hue of 7.5YR to 2.5Y, value of 2.5 or 3, and a chroma of 1 or 2. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to moderately acid.

The Eg horizon has a hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 1 or 2. Reaction ranges from very strongly acid to moderately acid.

The Bw horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5, and chroma of 3 or 4. Reaction ranges from slightly acid to neutral.

The C1 horizon has a hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 2 or 3. Reaction ranges from slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline.

The C2 horizon has a hue of 10YR or 7.5 YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 2 to 4. Reaction ranges from slightly alkaline to moderately alkaline. It is dominantly silt loam, but some pedons have stratified layers of very fine sand and silty clay loam.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hendrie soils are on lake plains. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 28 to 36 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 41 to 43 degrees F. Elevations range from 700 to 760 feet.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Auger, Annanias, Zandi, and Markey soils. The somewhat poorly drained Anannias and moderately well drained Auger soils are on slightly higher landscape positions. The well drained Zandi soils are on hills and ridges. The very poorly drained Markey soils are in depressions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained. This soil has wet soil moisture status that is at the surface to 6 inches below the surface from October through June. Surface runoff is low or negligible. Permeability is moderately slow.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of this soil are forested. Common trees are red maple, paper birch, balsam fir, quaking aspen, northern white cedar, white spruce, black spruce, and tamarack.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: St. Paul, Minnesota.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Luce County, Michigan; 2005. Source of name is a river in Luce County.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in the pedon are: Albic horizon- the zone from 4 to 7 inches (E horizon); Cambic horizon- the zone from 7 to 16 inches (Bw horizon).
