HENHOIT SERIES

The Henhoit series consists of deep, well drained soils that formed in material weathered from conglomerate of sandstone and quartzite. These soils are on mountain slopes. Slopes are 30 to 60 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 530 mm, and the mean annual air temperature is about 6 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Ultic Argixerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Henhoit gravelly loam, rangeland. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted)

Oi--0 to 8 cm; matted leaves, twigs and stems. (3 to 8 cm thick)

A1--8 to 13 cm; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) gravelly loam, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) dry; moderate fine granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; 20 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 5.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 25 cm thick)

A2--13 to 33 cm; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/3) gravelly loam, reddish brown (5YR 4/4) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure that parts to weak medium granular; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine, fine and medium, few coarse root; 20 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 5.8); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 28 cm thick)

Bt1--33 to 71 cm; dark red (2.5YR 3/6) very gravelly clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) dry; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine, fine and medium, few coarse roots; few very fine and fine pores; common thin clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 35 percent gravel and 20 percent cobbles; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--71 to 135 cm; dark red (2.5YR 3/6) very gravelly clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) dry; moderate coarse and medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, sticky and plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine and few fine pores; common thin clay films on faces of peds and in pores; 35 percent gravel and 25 percent cobbles; moderately acid (pH 5.7); abrupt wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of Bt1 and Bt2 horizons - 35 to 125 cm)

Bt3-- 135 to 160 cm, dark red (2.5YR 3/6) very gravelly clay loam, red (2.5YR 4/6) dry; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; 40 percent gravel and 25 percent cobbles; slightly calcareous, lime is disseminated; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4). (0 to 56 cm thick)

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Durst, Forsey, Holmes, Horrocks, Hoskin, Klicker, Sattley and Stemilt series. Durst, Hoskin and Klicker soils are 60 to 100 cm deep over bedrock. Forsey, Holmes, Horrocks, Hoskin and Stemilt soils have more than 75 percent base saturation in all parts above a depth of 75 cm. Also Forsey, Holmes and Horrocks soils have sola less than 75 cm thick and lack hue as red as 2.5YR in the Bt horizons; Stemilt soils have hue of 10YR only in the Bt horizon. Sattley soils have dominant hue of 10YR but have some 7.5YR hue with chroma of 2 in the Bt horizons and have a solum thickness of less than 125 cm.
