COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ayon, Curabith, Modyon, and Pena soils. All these soils lack cemented horizons. In addition, Ayon soils are dominated by rock fragments greater than 3 inches in size. Curabith soils have mean annual soil temperatures less than 52 degrees F. Modyon soils have a lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hogadero soils are on ridges of very old alluvial deposits derived from mixed igneous and sedimentary rocks. Slope is 1 to 8 percent. Elevation is 4,300 to 6,000. Hogadero soils are in a semi-arid continental climate. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 17 inches. The mean annual temperature is about 50 to 55 degrees F. The frost-free period is about 150 to 175 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Deama, Pastura, and the competing Pena soils. Deama soils are less than 20 inches deep to limestone. Pastura soils are less than 20 inches deep to a petrocalcic horizon.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; slow permeability in cemented horizon.
USE AND VEGETATION: Hogadero soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. Present vegetation is black grama, sideoats grama, galleta, Apacheplume, and forbs.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern and south-central New Mexico. The series is not extensive.
