HOGADERO SERIES

The Hogadero series consists of deep, well drained gravelly soils that formed in highly eroded very old alluvial deposits derived mainly from acid igneous and sedimentary rocks. They are on ridges and have slopes of 1 to 8 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 52 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, mesic Aridic Calciustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Hogadero loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 4 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) moist; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine roots; 5 percent rounded pebbles and cobbles; neutral (pH 6.8); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 6 inches thick)

A2--4 to 8 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly clay loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine subangular blocky and moderate medium granular structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common fine and many very fine roots; 30 percent rounded pebbles and 5 percent cobbles; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (4 to 12 inches thick)

A3--8 to 11 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) gravelly loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium granular structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine and very fine roots; 30 percent rounded pebbles and 5 percent cobbles; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Bk1--11 to 15 inches; white (10YR 8/1) gravelly loam, very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; massive; extremely hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine vertical roots in cracks; strongly cemented with calcium carbonate in less than 90 percent of the horizon; 10 percent rounded pebbles and 5 percent cobbles; rock fragments coated on all sides with calcium carbonate; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

Bk2--15 to 30 inches; light gray (2.5Y 7/2) very gravelly loam, light gray (10YR 7/2) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; 50 percent rounded pebbles and 5 percent cobbles; rock fragments coated on all sides with calcium carbonate; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); gradual smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Bk3--30 to 60 inches; pale yellow (2.5Y 7/4) extremely gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) moist; massive; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; 60 percent rounded pebbles and 5 percent cobbles; rock fragments coated on all sides with calcium carbonate; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2).

TYPE LOCATION: Lincoln County, New Mexico; on ridge about 1-1/2 miles east of ranch road, about 32 miles northeast of Capitan; NW corner section 22, T. 6 S., R. 19 E.

Bk horizon: Hue - 10YR or 2.5Y
Value: 4 through 8 dry
Chroma: 1 through 4
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 15 to 40 percent

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ayon, Curabith, Modyon, and Pena soils. All these soils lack cemented horizons. In addition, Ayon soils are dominated by rock fragments greater than 3 inches in size. Curabith soils have mean annual soil temperatures less than 52 degrees F. Modyon soils have a lithic contact at 20 to 40 inches.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hogadero soils are on ridges of very old alluvial deposits derived from mixed igneous and sedimentary rocks. Slope is 1 to 8 percent. Elevation is 4,300 to 6,000. Hogadero soils are in a semi-arid continental climate. The mean annual precipitation is 12 to 17 inches. The mean annual temperature is about 50 to 55 degrees F. The frost-free period is about 150 to 175 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Deama, Pastura, and the competing Pena soils. Deama soils are less than 20 inches deep to limestone. Pastura soils are less than 20 inches deep to a petrocalcic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; slow permeability in cemented horizon.

USE AND VEGETATION: Hogadero soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. Present vegetation is black grama, sideoats grama, galleta, Apacheplume, and forbs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southeastern and south-central New Mexico. The series is not extensive.
