TYPICAL PEDON: Horseflat very cobbly loam in an area of rangeland, on a 38-percent, north-facing slope at an elevation of 610 m (All textures are apparent field textures.)

A--0 to 10 cm; very cobbly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine and medium granular structure; soft, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; few very fine irregular pores; 20 percent gravel and 25 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary

AB--10 to 23 cm; very gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; few very fine irregular pores; 30 percent gravel and 10 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary

Bt--23 to 41 cm; extremely gravelly loam, brown (10YR 5/3) dry, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; 50 percent gravel and 15 percent cobbles; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); abrupt irregular boundary

R--41 cm; basalt; silica coatings on 30 percent of surface area
