Ap--0 to 12 inches; black (10YR 2/1) silty clay loam, dark gray (10YR 4/1) dry, moderate medium subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine and very fine roots; many fine tubular pores; few fine prominent dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) masses of iron accumulation; strongly acid (pH 5.4); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Bt1--12 to 29 inches; very dark grayish brown (2.5Y 3/2) silty clay loam, light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) dry, moderate coarse prismatic structure parting to moderate coarse subangular blocky; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; many fine and very fine roots; many fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on ped faces and in pores; many fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; strongly acid (pH 5.2); clear smooth boundary.

Bt2--29 to 41 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) silty clay loam, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) dry, moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common very fine roots; many fine tubular pores; few few distinct clay films on ped faces and in pores; many fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 5 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 4.8); gradual wavy boundary.

Bt3--41 to 52 inches; gray (5Y 5/1) clay loam, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) dry, weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and very fine roots; many fine tubular pores; few faint clay films on ped faces and in pores; many fine prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 10 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 4.8); gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Bt horizon ranges from 20 to 40 inches)

2C--52 to 65 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) loam, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) dry, massive; very hard, very firm, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine roots; common fine tubular pores; many fine prominent brown (7.5YR 4/4) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 5 percent gravel; very strongly acid (pH 4.8); gradual wavy boundary. (10 to 15 inches thick)

3Cd--65 inches; consolidated gravelly material.

TYPE LOCATION: Curry County, Oregon; located about 100 feet north and 1470 feet west of the southeast corner of section 9, T. 41 S., R. 13 W., W.M. (Latitude 42 degrees, 02 minutes, 00 seconds N, Longitude 124 degrees, 14 minutes, 45 seconds W)

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 54 to 59 degrees F. The mean annual summer soil temperature is 53 to 56 degrees F. and the mean winter soil temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F. The difference between mean summer and mean winter soil temperatures varies from 5 to 9 degrees F. The soils are usually moist and are dry less then 45 consecutive days between 4 and 12 inches in the four months following the summer solstice. The particle-size control section averages 35 to 45 percent clay and 0 to 15 percent rock fragments. Depth to the consolidated gravelly layer is 40 to 70 inches. The umbric epipedon is 10 to 20 inches thick.

The A horizon has value of 2 or 3 moist, 4 or 5 dry and chroma of 1 or 2 moist and dry. It has few to common prominent redox concentrations with hue 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. It is strongly or moderately acid.

The Bt horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 3 to 5 moist, 6 or 7 dry, and chroma of 1 or 2 moist and 2 dry. It has many prominent redox concentrations with hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6, and chroma of 4 to 6. It is silty clay loam, clay loam and clay with 35 to 45 percent clay. It has 0 to 15 percent gravel. It is strongly to very strongly acid.

The 2C horizon has hue 2.5Y or 5Y, value of 5 to 7 moist and dry and chroma of 1 or 2 moist and dry. It has many prominent redox concentrations with hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 6. It is loam or clay loam with 25 to 35 percent clay and 5 to 15 percent gravel.

The 3Cd horizon is a consolidated gravelly layer.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Huffling soils are on marine terraces. Slopes are 0 to 3 percent. The soils formed in marine sediments. Elevations are 40 to 200 feet. The climate is humid, characterized by warm, wet winters and warm moist summers with fog. A strong marine influence limits the diurnal and annual range of temperature. The mean annual precipitation is 70 to 90 inches. The mean annual temperature is 52 to 57 degrees F. The frost-free period is 270 to 330 days. Huffling soils are on the Pioneer geomorphic surface.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Crofland and Klooqueh soils. Crofland soils are somewhat poorly drained with redox depletions between 20 and 30 inches. Klooqueh soils are well drained.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; slow permeability. A high water table is present from 6 inches above the surface to 18 inches below the surface from December through April.

USE AND VEGETATION: The soils are used mainly for pasture, homesites, and limited lily bulb production. Native vegetation is coastal redwood, Douglas -ir, red alder, California laurel, willows, sedges, skunkcabbage and grasses.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Pleistocene marine terrace of southwestern Oregon; MLRA 4B. The series is of small extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Curry County, Oregon, 1995.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon include:

Umbric epipedon - from 0 to 12 inches. (Ap horizon)

Argillic horizon - from of 12 to 52 inches. (Bt1, Bt2, Bt3 horizons)

Aquults feature - soil is saturated and has chroma moist of 1 below the Ap horizon which has a moist value of 2. The Bt1 horizon has moist chroma of 2 with associated redox concentrations.

Assume a base saturation of less than 35 percent at 125 cm below the top of the argillic horizon.
