HUNTSBURG SERIES

The Huntsburg series consists of deep, moderately well drained, very slowly permeable soils on uplands. These nearly level to sloping soils formed in thick coastal plain sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 8 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, semiactive, thermic Aquic Paleudalfs

TYPICAL PEDON: Huntsburg loamy fine sand - forested. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0-6 inches, brown (10YR 5/3) loamy fine sand, pale brown (10YR 6/3) dry; weak fine granular structure; soft, very friable; many fine and medium roots, common coarse roots; common fine and medium pores; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. (4 to 8 inches thick)

E--6-14 inches, light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) loamy fine sand, very pale brown (10YR 7/4) dry; single grained; soft, very friable; many fine and medium roots, common coarse roots; common fine and medium pores; few nodules of ironstone 4 mm. to 10 mm. in diameter; medium acid; abrupt wavy boundary. (7 to 12 inches thick)

Bt1--14-22 inches, yellowish brown (10YR 5/8) sandy clay; few fine prominent red mottles; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm; many medium and coarse roots; common fine pores; thin patchy clay films on faces of peds; few nodules of ironstone 4 mm. to 10 mm. in diameter; strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

Bt2--22-32 inches, mottled gray (10YR 6/1), dark red (2.5YR 3/6),
and reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) clay; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; common fine and medium roots and few coarse roots; few fine pores; thin patchy clay films on faces of peds; about 4 percent plinthite and red mottles having hard centers; strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (8 to 15 inches thick)

Bt3--32-48 inches, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) clay; many medium and coarse prominent red (10R 4/8) and few fine distinct reddish yellow mottles; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; common fine and medium roots in the gray; common fine pores; thin patchy clay films on faces of peds; about 4 percent plinthite; center of a few of the red mottles have fine concretions; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 20 inches thick)

Bt4--48-61 inches, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) clay; common medium prominent dark red (10R 3/6) and common medium distinct reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) mottles; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; common fine and medium roots in the gray; few fine pores; thin patchy clay films on faces of peds; few nodules of plinthite; common fine and medium shiny faces and slickensides; very strongly acid; clear smooth boundary. (10 to 15 inches thick)

Bt5--61-72 inches, light gray (2.5Y 7/2) clay; few fine prominent dark red and few fine distinct brownish yellow mottles; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; very hard, very firm; few fine and medium roots; few fine pores; thin patchy clay films on faces of peds; few nodules of plinthite; common fine and medium shiny faces and slickensides; very strongly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Walker County, Texas; from the Walker County Courthouse in Huntsville, Texas, 3.7 miles east on U.S. Highway 190; then south 4.2 miles on Farm Road 2929; then south on Fournotch Road 4.75 miles; then east and north 0.5 mile on FS 1375A Road and 75 feet west of road.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness ranges from 60 to more than 100 inches. The soil typically contains a few nodules of plinthite, but ranges from none to about 4 percent by volume in the Bt horizon.

The A horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 1 to 3. The E horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 3 to 5, and chroma of 1 to 3. The A horizons are loamy fine sand or loamy sand and range from slightly acid to medium acid. Nodules of ironstone range from none to about 10 percent by volume.

The Bt1 horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 or 5, and chroma of 4 to 8. Mottles of red, dark red, yellowish red, or brown are few to common. The Bt2 horizon is reticulately mottled in shades of red, yellow, brown and gray. Reddish colors are in hue of 10R to 5YR, value of 3 to 5 and chroma of 6 or 8. Yellowish and brownish colors have hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 5 or 6 and chroma of 4 to 8. Grayish colors have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 or less. The lower Bt horizons have hue of 10YR or 2.5Y, value of 5 to 7, and chroma of 2 or less. Mottles are dark red, red, yellowish red, reddish yellow, strong brown, brownish yellow, or yellowish brown. The Bt horizons are sandy clay or clay. The reaction ranges from strongly to very strongly acid. Nodules of ironstone and siliceous pebbles range from 0 to 15 percent by volume.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Stigler and Tamaha series in the same family and the similar Conroe, Depcor, Fetzer, and Wockley series. The Stigler and Tamaha soils have annual temperatures less than 64 degrees F, contain more silt throughout., and are formed from colluvium or alluvium over siltstones. Conroe soils contain more than 5 percent plinthite and less than 35 percent base saturation. Depcor and Fetzer soils have fine-loamy control sections.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Huntsburg soils are on nearly level to sloping uplands in the western part of the Southern Coastal Plain. Slope gradients range from 0 to 8 percent. The soil formed in stratified clayey and loamy sediments of marine or fluvial origin. The climate is subhumid. At the type location, the mean annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 48 inches, mean annual temperature ranges from 66 to 69 degrees F, and Thornthwaite annual P-E index ranges from about 62 to 74.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Conroe and Depcor series, and the Annona, Boy, Gunter, and Redco series. Annona soils have loamy surface layers, COLE of more than 0.09 and montmorillonitic mineralogy. Boy and Gunter soils have sandy surface layers more than 40 inches thick and loamy Bt horizons. Redco soils have gilgai microrelief and intersecting slickensides.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Moderately well drained; slow runoff; very slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Small areas are used for pastures or cultivated crops, main are in forest. Native vegetation is loblolly and shortleaf pine, red oak, and other hardwoods.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern coastal plain area of Texas. Series is of moderate extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Temple, Texas

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Walker County, Texas, 1975.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Ochric epipedon--0 to 6 inches

Albic horizon--6 to 14 inches

Argillic horizon--14 to 72 inches

Aquic feature--low chroma colors due to wetness within 30 inches

The original concept of the Huntsburg series was of a soil containing more than 5 percent plinthite. A study of the type location and a number of other areas mapped as Huntsburg showed that the soil contained less than 5 percent plinthite. It is reclassified in 1988.
