HYSHOT SERIES

The Hyshot series consists of well drained, slowly permeable soils that are moderately deep to soft, platy, gypsiferous shale on hillsides. They formed in slopewash alluvium and residuum derived dominantly from gypsiferous shale. Slopes range from 6 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 12 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 50 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, smectitic, mesic Ustic Calcigypsids

TYPICAL PEDON: Hyshot clay loam--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A--0 to 2 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) clay loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; moderate thick platy structure parting to moderate medium granular; slightly hard, friable, sticky and plastic; many fine and common medium roots; strongly effervescent, carbonates disseminated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4); clear smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)

Bk--2 to 11 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) clay loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak medium prismatic structure parting to weak medium subangular blocky; hard, firm, sticky and plastic; common fine roots; violently effervescent, common medium soft cylindrical masses of carbonate following root channels; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); gradual wavy boundary
(8 to 21 inches thick)

By--11 to 23 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) clay loam, grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) moist; weak medium platy shale rock structure; slightly hard, friable, sticky and plastic; few fine roots; violently effervescent, carbonates disseminated; common seams and threads of gypsum; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4). (10 to 15 inches thick)

Cr--23 to 60 inches; soft, platy, gypsiferous shale.

TYPE LOCATION: Natrona County, Wyoming; about 6 miles east of the Willow Creek School; 150 feet south and 1,600 feet west of the NE corner of sec. 3, T. 40 N., R. 82 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to bedrock ranges from 20 to 40 inches. Hue is 2.5Y or 10YR, value is 6 or 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma is 2 or 3. The particle-size control section is clay loam or clay with 35 to 45 percent clay and less than 35 percent fine sand or coarser. The mean annual soil temperature is 50 to 52 degrees F.

The Bk horizon has 15 to 25 percent calcium carbonate equivalent. It is moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline. EC is 2 to 4 mmhos.

The By horizon has 6 to 20 percent gypsum. It is mildly alkaline or moderately alkaline. In some pedons it has up to 70 percent soft, platy shale fragments which break down on pretreatment. EC is 4 to 8 mmhos.

The Cr is soft, platy gypsiferous shale. It is frequently more than 20 feet thick.

COMPETING SERIES: This is the Brokenhorn series. Brokenhorn soils are deep.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Hyshot soils are on hillsides. Elevation is 5,000 to 5,500 feet. Slopes range from 6 to 15 percent. They formed in slopewash alluvium and residuum derived dominantly from gypsiferous shale. The mean annual precipitation is 10 to 14 inches, and the mean annual temperature is 48 to 51 degrees F. The frost-free season is 120 to 130 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Lonebear, Silhouette, and the competing Brokenhorn soils. Lonebear soils have a cambic horizon and do not have a calcic horizon. Silhouette soils have a cambic horizon and do not have a calcic or gypsic horizon.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; rapid runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used mainly for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Native vegetation is mainly green needlegrass, western wheatgrass, big sagebrush, and winterfat.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Central Wyoming. The series is of small extent.
