HUZZAH SERIES

The Huzzah series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately rapid permeable soils on floodplains. Slopes range from 0 to 3 percent. Mean annual temperature is about 56 degrees F, and mean annual precipitation is about 42 inches.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, siliceous, superactive, mesic Cumulic Hapludolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Huzzah silt loam, 0 to 3 percent slopes, frequently flooded on a forested low stream terrace at an elevation of 610 feet. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

A1--0 to 6 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

A2--6 to 25 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; slightly acid; gradual smooth boundary.

A3--25 to 38 inches; very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary.

Bw1--38 to 46 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) loam; moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral; gradual smooth boundary.

Bw2--46 to 56 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) fine sandy loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; very friable; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

Bw3--56 to 63 inches; dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) fine sandy loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral; clear smooth boundary.

Bw4--63 to 80 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) silt loam; weak fine and medium subangular blocky structure; friable; few very fine and fine roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; slightly acid.

TYPE LOCATION: Crawford County, Missouri; about 5 miles south of Onondaga Cave; 730 feet north and 1,935 feet west of the southeast corner of section 5, T. 39 N., R. 2 W., USGS Onondaga Cave, Missouri topographic quadrangle; UTM-Zone 15, Easting 661360.0, Northing 4220540; latitude 38 degrees, 7 minutes, 12.4 seconds, longitude 91 degrees, 9 minutes, 33.7 seconds.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Solum thickness and depth to bedrock is 60 or more inches. Thickness of the mollic epipedon is 24 to more than 60 inches. In some pedons, the mollic epipedon extends into the Bw horizon.

Ap or A horizon:
Hue: 10YR
Value: 2 or 3 (3 to 5 dry)
Chroma: 2 or 3 (2 or 3 dry)
Fine-earth: silt loam, loam, sandy loam, or fine sandy loam
Reaction: neutral to moderately acid

Bw horizon:
Hue: 10YR
Value: 3 to 5
Chroma: 2 to 6
Fine-earth: silt loam, loam, fine sandy loam, or loamy fine sand
Reaction: neutral to strongly acid

C horizon:
Hue: 10YR
Value: 4 to 6
Chroma: 3 to 6
Texture: fine sandy loam, loamy fine sand, fine sand, or sand
Rock fragments: 0 to 80 percent gravel
Reaction: neutral to moderately acid

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Huzzah soils are on floodplains. Average annual temperature ranges from 54 to 57 degrees F, and average annual precipitation ranges from 40 to 45 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These include the Horsecreek, Kaintuck, Relfe, and Razort soils. Horsecreek soils are fine-silty and on higher floodplain positions. Kaintuck soils have ochric epipedon and are on similar positions. Relfe soils are sandy-skeletal and are on similar positions as the Huzzah series. Razort soils are fine-loamy and are on higher floodplain positions.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Runoff is neglible to low. Permeability is moderately rapid. The saturated hydraulic conductivity is high. These soils are subject to frequent flooding for very brief to brief durations in most years.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas are used for pasture and hayland. Other areas are in brushy regrowth or timber. Native vegetation is mixed hardwoods.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: The Ozark Highland Region of Missouri (MLRA 116A). The series is of minor extent.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Morgantown, West Virginia

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Washington County, Missouri, 2003. The name is from a village in Crawford County.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this series are:
mollic epipedon - the zone from the surface of the soil to a depth of 38 inches (A1,A2, and A3 horizons);
cambic horizon - the zone from approximately 38 inches to 80 inches (Bw1, Bw2, Bw3, Bw4 horizon); udic moisture regime.
