TYPE LOCATION: Island of Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia; about 984 feet north of the high school boundary in Tofol and 33 feet west of the main road; lat. 5 degrees 19 minutes 47 seconds N. and long. 163 degrees 0 minute 28 seconds E.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to the fluctuating water table ranges from 6 to 23 inches, depth to the gleyed C horizon ranges from 12 to 23 inches. The profile is strongly acid or medium acid.
The A horizon has moist color of 10YR 2/2, 3/2, 3/3, or 3/4. It is silty clay loam or sandy clay loam and has 0 to 30 percent pebbles.
The upper part of the B horizon has moist color of 10YR 3/3 or 4/3 and has mottles of 7.5YR 4/6, 5/6, or 5/8. The lower part has moist color of 10YR 4/1 or 4/2 and has mottles of 5YR 5/6 or 5/8, or of 7.5YR 4/6 or 5/8. It is sandy clay loam, clay loam, or silty clay loam and has 0 to 30 percent pebbles.
The C horizon has moist color of 5G 4/1, of 5GY 4/1, or of 5Y 5/2. It is silty clay loam, clay loam, silty clay, or clay and has 0 to 30 percent pebbles.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Insak and Nansepsep series. Insak soils are sandy. Nansepsep soils are somewhat poorly drained.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Inkosr soils are on bottomlands. They formed in alluvium derived dominantly from basic igneous rock. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Elevation is 3 to 49 feet. The mean annual rainfall is about 157 to 196 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about 81 degrees F.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ngerungor and the competing Nansepsep soils. Ngerungor soils are organic and very poorly drained.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Poorly drained; slow runoff; moderate permeability. The soils are flooded occasionally for very brief periods in any month. The water table is at a depth of 6 to 23 inches throughout the year.
USE AND VEGETATION: Inkosr soils are generally left idle, but in some areas they are used to grow wetland taro or rice. In areas not cultivated, the vegetation is swamp forest or freshwater marsh.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: On the islands of Kosrae and Ponape, East Caroline Islands. The series is of small extent.
