JIPPER SERIES


The Jipper series consists of deep and very deep, well drained soils that formed in loess and eolian sands over basalt. Jipper soils are on smooth and concave positions on lava flows on lava fields. Slopes range from 1 to 20 percent. The mean annual air temperature is about 5 degrees C. and the mean annual precipitation is about 381 millimeters.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, frigid Calcic Pachic Haploxerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Jipper very fine sandy loam on a north facing linear 2 percent slope, under shrubs at an elevation of 1723 meters. When described on September 7, 2004 the soil was dry throughout. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1-- 0 to 8 cm; dark brown (10YR 3/3) very fine sandy loam, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak fine and medium granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; many very fine irregular pores; slightly acid (pH 6.5); clear smooth boundary.

A2-- 8 to 20 cm; dark brown (10YR 3/3) very fine sandy loam, very dark brown (7.5YR 2.5/2) moist, moderate fine and medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic, many very fine and fine, and few medium roots; many very fine irregular and common very fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); clear wavy boundary. (combined thickness of the A horizons 10 to 38 cm)

Bw1-- 20 to 46 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak medium and coarse prismatic structure parting to strong medium subangular blocky; very hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine, and few medium roots; many very fine tubular pores; 1 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.1); gradual wavy boundary.

Bw2-- 46 to 79 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate coarse and very coarse prismatic structure parting to strong medium and coarse subangular blocky; very hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine and fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 1 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH7.5); clear wavy boundary. (combined thickness of the Bw1 and Bw2 horizons 12 to 86 cm)

Bw3--79 to 94 cm; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 3 percent gravel; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); abrupt wavy boundary. (5 to 20 cm thick)

Bkq-- 94 to 107 cm; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; finely disseminated calcium carbonate in the soil matrix; carbonate and silica coats less than 1 mm thick on bottoms of rock fragments; strongly effervescent (11 percent calcium carbonate) 3 percent gravel; moderately alkaline (pH 7.9); abrupt wavy boundary. (0 to 13 cm thick)

Bk1-- 107 to 137 cm; pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) moist; weak medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots, common very fine tubular and irregular pores; many calcium carbonate threads and irregular nodules in the soil matrix and calcium carbonate coatings on ped faces; strongly effervescent (13 percent calcium carbonate); 4 percent gravel and 1 percent cobbles; moderately alkaline (pH 8.3); abrupt wavy boundary.

Bk2-- 137 to 147 cm; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) loam, very pale brown (10YR 7/3) moist; weak medium platy structure parting to moderate fine subangular blocky; slightly hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine roots, common very fine tubular and irregular pores; many finely disseminated calcium carbonate in the soil matrix; violently effervescent (58 percent calcium carbonate); 4 percent gravel and 1 percent cobbles; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt wavy boundary. (combined thickness of the Bk horizons 15 to 61 cm)

2R-- 147 cm; vesicular basalt

TYPE LOCATION: Clark County, Idaho about 19.3 kilometers east and 3.2 kilometers south of Dubois, Idaho; about 662 meters south and 7 meters west of the northeast corner of section 34, T. 10N. R.38E; USGS Snowshoe Butte, Idaho topographic quadrangle: latitude 44 degrees, 9 minutes, 10.4 seconds N. and longitude 111 degrees, 57 minutes and 14.6 seconds W.; NAD 83

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Mean annual soil temperature: 4 to 7.5 degrees C.(Frigid soil temperature regime)
Mean summer soil temperature: 17 to 21 degrees C.
Thickness of mollic epipedon: 50 to 124 cm.
Depth to calcic horizon: 53 to 110 cm.
Particle size control section noncarbonated clay content: averages 10 to 18 percent
Depth to bedrock: typically 100 to 152 centimeters but ranges to over 152 centimeters as a loamy substratum phase is recognized

A horizons:
Hue: 10YR dry, 10YR or 7.5YR moist
Value: 3 through 5 dry, 2 through 3 moist
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry or moist
Rock fragments: 0 to 5 percent gravel
Clay content: total 5 to 15 percent
Reaction: slightly acid to neutral

Bw horizons:
Value: 3 through 5 dry, 2 through 4 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4 dry or moist
Texture: VFSL, FSL, L
Rock fragments: 0 to 10 percent gravel
Clay: Total 5 to 17 percent
Reaction: Neutral to slightly alkaline

Bk and where present Bkq horizons:
Value: 5 through 8 dry, 4 through 6 moist
Chroma: 2 through 4 dry or moist
Texture: FSL, VFSL, L but includes LS, GR-FSL, and GR-LS in the loamy substratum phase
Rock fragments: typically less than 10 percent but ranges up to 35 percent in the loamy substratum phase
Clay: Total 11 or 20 percent, 1 to 10 percent carbonate clay, 10 to 18 percent noncarbonate clay
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 5 to 15 percent in the upper part and 15 to 60 percent in the horizons above the bedrock
Nodules: 0 to 10 percent moderately cemented cicada nodules

COMPETING SERIES:
This is the Stipe series. Stipe soils are 50 to 100 centimeters to bedrock.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Blacknoll, Jacoby (T), Katseanes, Nayrib, Pinebutte, Eaglecone (T), Stipe, Vadnais, Wolverine and the competing Stipe series soils. Blacknoll and Vadnais soils are moderately deep. Jacoby have mollic colors less than 50 cm thick. Katseanes soils are shallow. Nayrib soils are on pressure ridges and are very shallow. Pinebutte soils are fine-loamy. Eaglecone soils have greater than 35 percent coarse fragments in the control section. Wolverine soils are on stabilized dunes and lack a mollic epipedon and calcic horizon.

Dominant native vegetation: mountain big sagebrush, threetip sagebrush, antelope bitterbrush, bluebunch wheatgrass, Idaho fescue, bluegrass, prairie junegrass, needleandthread, carex spp, horsebrush, western wheatgrass, bushy birdsbeak, lupine, pussytoes, western yarrow, buckwheat.

Particle size control section - the zone from 25 to 100 cm
The 2008 OSD revision moves the type location from Fremont County, Idaho.
