JOYUDA SERIES

The Joyuda series consists of very deep, very poorly drained, moderately permeable soils in tidal marshes of the Humid Coastal Plains MLRA. They formed in decomposed organic material. Near the type location, the mean annual temperature is about 77 degrees F., and the mean annual precipitation is about 63 inches. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Euic, isohyperthermic Hydric Haplohemists

TYPICAL PEDON: Joyuda mucky peat--wildlife habitat (Colors are for moist soil).

Oa--0 to 4 inches; black (10YR 2/1) mucky peat, rubbed; about 12 percent fiber material after rubbing; massive; very friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many fine to coarse roots; neutral; diffuse smooth boundary. (4 to 5 inches thick)

Oe--4 to 80 inches; greenish black (10Y 2.5/1) muck, rubbed; about 35 percent fiber material after rubbing; massive; very friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Approximately 1.5 miles northwest from the intersection of P.R. Hwy. 100 and P.R. Hwy. 311, about 0.40 mile southeast of P.R. Hwy. 102 from Punta Arenas, 600 feet east of the Atolladero lagoon and 400 feet west of the Joyuda lagoon on wildlife habitat. USGS Mayagez topographic quadrangle (1964); lat. 18 degrees 08 minutes 00 second N.; long. 67 degrees 10 minutes 56 seconds W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Thickness of the organic material is more than 80 inches. Reaction ranges from neutral to moderately alkaline throughout by the Truog Method.

The Oa horizon has hue of 10YR, value of 2, and chroma of 1. The fiber content ranges from 10 to 15 percent after rubbing. Texture is muck or mucky peat.

The Oi horizon, where present, has hue 10YR, value of 3, and chroma of 1. The fiber content range from 75 to over 90 percent after rubbing. Texture is muck or mucky peat.

The Oe horizon has hue of 5BY, 10Y or neutral, value of 2.5 or 3, and chroma of 1 or 2. The fiber content ranges from 20 to 35 percent after rubbing. Texture is muck.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no known series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Joyuda soils are in tidal marshes along the coast at elevations close to sea level. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. They formed from decomposed organic material. The climate is humid tropical. The average annual precipitation ranges from 60 to 70 inches and the average annual temperature ranges from 72 to 78 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Atolladero, Bajura, Catano, and Guanajibo series. All of these series are mineral soils. The poorly drained Atolladero and Bajura soils are on slightly higher positions. The excessively drained Catano soils are on higher adjacent positions. The well drained Guanajibo soils are on higher positions and have indurated plinthite.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most areas of Joyuda soils are in wildlife habitat. The vegetation consists of Red mangrove, White mangrove, Cocoplum, and Pond apple.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southern humid coastal plains of Puerto Rico. The series is not extensive.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Raleigh, North Carolina.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Cabo Rojo Municipality, Puerto Rico; 2007. The name is from Laguna Joyuda where it was originally recognized.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon:

Histic epipedon - the zone from 0 to 80 inches (Oa and Oe horizons).

This soil is either under sea water or flooded by high tides and the water table range from +2 to 11 inches.
.

This soil is in MLRA 272.

Joyuda soils were formerly included in the tidal swamp miscellaneous land type.
