KAMAOLE SERIES

The Kamaole series consists of well drained soils that formed in material weathered from ash overlying Aa lava. Kamaole soils are on uplands and have slopes of 3 to 15 percent. Mean annual rainfall is about 20 inches and mean annual temperature is about 69 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey over fragmental, mixed, semiactive, isothermic Aridic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Kamaole very stony silt loam - dryland pasture. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted. All textures are apparent field textures.)

A11--0 to 2 inches; dark brown (10YR 3/3) very stony silt loam, brown (10YR 4/3) dry; moderate thin and very thin platy structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many fine roots with a tendency to mat on plate faces; common fine pores; few fine black concretions; 10 to 15 percent stones; slight effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; medium acid (pH 5.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

A12--2 to 8 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) silty clay loam, dark reddish gray (5YR 4/2) dry; moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, sticky and plastic; common fine roots; many fine and very fine pores; few fine black concretions; few moderately weathered pebbles; slight effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; slightly acid (pH 6.2); gradual wavy boundary. (4 to 7 inches thick)

B2--8 to 20 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 3/2) silty clay, (5YR 3/3) dry; moderate very fine and fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; few roots; many fine pores; few fine black concretions; thin patchy clay films on peds; few sand-size aggregates that are more resistant than the matrix; 15 to 20 percent weathered pebbles and cobbles; strong effervescence with hydrogen peroxide; mildly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 14 inches thick)

IIC--20 inches; fragmental Aa lava with very little soil material in voids.

TYPE LOCATION: Island of Maui, Maui County, Hawaii; Puu O Kale Quadrangle - 20 degrees 45' 00" north latitude and 156 degrees 21' 44" west longitude; 100 feet north and 250 feet east of concrete watering trough on the Kaonoulu Ranch, 3.5 miles southeast of Waiakoa Post Office.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to fragmental Aa lava ranges from 16 to 24 inches. Stoniness ranges from very stony to extremely stony. The mean annual soil temperature is 69 degrees F.

The A horizon has hue of 5YR through 10YR, value of 2 or 3 moist, 3 or 4 dry, and chroma of 2 or 3 moist and 2 through 4 dry.

The B horizon has hue of 5YR or 7.5YR, and value of 2 or 3 moist. It is silty clay loam or silty clay.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Hawi, Keawakapu and Hahukona series. Hawi soils lack a fragmental control section and have a mean annual soil temperature of 73 degrees F. Keawakapu soils have prismatic structure in the upper part of the B horizon and a mean annual soil temperature of 76 degrees F. Mahukona soils have a fine-silty control section and have prismatic structure in the upper part of the B horizon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Kamaole soils are on uplands. Slope is 3 to 15 percent. Aa lava outcrops are common on the landscape. Elevation ranges from 1,500 to 2,300 feet. The soil formed in ash over Aa lava. Mean annual temperature is about 69 degrees F.; average January temperature is 67 degrees F.; average July temperature is 71 degrees F. Annual rainfall is 15 to 25 inches.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the competing Keawakapu soils and the Kula soils. Kula soils have a uniform ashy control section.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: These soils are used for dryland pasture. The natural vegetation is bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) castor bean (Ricinus communis), false mallow Malvestrum coromandelianum), feather fingergrass (Chloris virgata), and kiawe (Prosopis chilensis).

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: island of Maui, Maui County, Hawaii. This series is inextensive comprising 8,700 acres.
