TAXONOMIC CLASS: Medial over loamy, amorphic over mixed, superactive Andic Haplocryods

TYPICAL PEDON: Kenai silt loam -- forest (All colors are for moist soil)

Oe--0 to 2 inches; dark reddish brown (5YR 2/2) moderately decomposed plant material; many very fine, fine, medium, and coarse roots; extremely acid (pH 4.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 5 inches thick)

E--2 to 5 inches; dark gray (5Y 4/1) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine and fine roots, common medium roots, and few coarse roots; nonsmeary; extremely acid (pH 4.4); abrupt irregular boundary. (1 to 4 inches thick)

Bs--5 to 15 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine roots, few fine, medium, and coarse roots; slightly smeary; moderately acid (pH 5.6); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 15 inches thick)

Bw--15 to 19 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) and dark olive brown (2.5Y 3/3) silt loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; slightly smeary; slightly acid (pH 6.1); clear wavy boundary. (3 to 8 inches thick)

2BC--19 to 24 inches; olive brown (2.5Y 4/3) very fine sandy loam; weak fine granular structure; very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; 2 percent gravel; slightly acid (pH 6.2); gradual boundary. (4 to 12 inches thick)

3C1--24 to 32 inches; olive (5Y 4/3) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly sticky and plastic; few very fine and fine roots; 1 percent gravel; moderately acid (pH 6.0); gradual smooth wavy boundary. (5 to 10 inches thick)

3C2--32 to 60 inches; olive gray (5Y 4/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm, slightly sticky and plastic; firm, slightly sticky and plastic; slightly acid (pH 6.1).

TYPE LOCATION: Western Kenai Peninsula Area, Alaska; about 1/4 mile west of Union Lake, Alaska; in the SE 1/4, NE 1/4, section 16, T. 5 N., R. 10 W.; Kenai C3 SW 1:25,000 quad, Seward Meridian; UTM north 6711395 and UTM 607716, zone 5.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Cohoe, Mutnala, Naptowne, Whitsol series. Cohoe, Naptowne, Mutnala, and Whitsol soils have less than 20 percent clay in the substratum.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained, low to very high runoff. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is high in the solum and moderately low to moderately high in the till.

USE AND VEGETATION: Mostly in forest consisting of white spruce and paper birch with some quaking aspen and cottonwood. Some areas are cleared and used for grasses, potatoes, and other vegetables.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 224 Cook Inlet Lowlands South-central Alaska. The series is of moderate extent.
