KILMANAGH SERIES


The Kilmanagh series consists of very deep, poorly drained soils that are moderately deep or deep to dense till. Kilmanagh soils formed in loamy till on till plains and moraines. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 838 mm (33 inches), and mean annual temperature is about 8.9 degrees C (48 degrees F).

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, active, nonacid, mesic Aeric Epiaquepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Kilmanagh loam, on a 1 percent slope on a cultivated field cropped to sugar beets on a till plain. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise stated.)

Ap--0 to 23 cm (9 inches); very dark gray (10YR 3/1) loam, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; 3 percent gravel and cobbles; slightly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary. [18 to 30 cm (7 to 12 inches) thick]

Bg--23 to 66 cm (9 to 26 inches); gray (10YR 5/1) loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; common medium distinct dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) masses of oxidized iron; 3 percent gravel and cobbles; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. [5 to 56 cm (2 to 22 inches) thick]

Bw--66 to 74 cm (26 to 29 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loam; weak fine subangular blocky structure; friable; common medium prominent gray (5Y 5/1) iron depletions; 3 percent gravel and cobbles; slightly alkaline; clear wavy boundary. [5 to 51 cm (2 to 20 inches) thick]

C--74 to 112 cm (29 to 44 inches); dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) loam; common medium prominent gray (5Y 5/1) and few medium distinct light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) iron depletions; very weak fine angular blocky structure; friable; 5 percent gravel and cobbles; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline; gradual wavy boundary. [33 to 51 cm (13 to 20 inches) thick]

Cd--112 to 152 cm (44 to 60 inches); brown (10YR 5/3) loam; massive; very firm; many medium faint dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) masses of oxidized iron; many medium prominent gray (5Y 5/1) iron depletions; 5 percent gravel and cobbles; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline.

TYPE LOCATION: Huron County, Michigan; about 3 miles south of Pigeon; 160 feet south and 1,960 feet west of the northeast corner of sec. 26, T. 16 N., R. 10 E.

Thickness of the solum: commonly 51 to 91 cm (20 to 36 inches) but ranges from 28 to 112 cm (11 to 44 inches)
Depth to carbonates: commonly 51 to 91 cm (20 to 36 inches) but ranges from 28 to 112 cm (11 to 44 inches)
Depth to densic contact: 61 to 127 cm (24 to 50 inches)

Chroma: 1 or 2
Texture: loam, cobbly loam, sandy loam, or clay loam
Rock fragment content: 0 to 15 percent gravel and 0 to 25 percent cobbles
Reaction: slightly acid to slightly alkaline

Bg horizon:
Hue: 5YR to 10YR

Chroma: 1 or 2

Bw horizon:

C and Cd horizons:
Texture: loam or sandy loam
Structure: massive or has thick platy fragments
Rock fragment content: 0 to 15 percent gravel and 0 to 8 percent cobbles

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in the same family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kilmanagh soils are on nearly level and depressional areas of till plains and moraines of Wisconsinan age. Slope ranges from 0 to 2 percent. They formed in loamy till. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 737 to 940 mm (29 to 37 inches). Mean annual temperature ranges from 7.2 to 10.0 degrees C (45 to 50 degrees F).

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Kilmanagh soils are a part of a drainage sequence which includes the moderately well drained Grindstone soils and the somewhat poorly drained Shebeon and Aubarque soils. Badaxe soils are associated in some places where a thin sandy loam layer overlies the loam till.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Poorly drained. Potential for surface runoff is negligible to high depending on shape and gradient of slope and depth of densic contact. Saturated hydraulic conductivity is moderately high in the solum and low in the Cd horizon. Permeability is moderate in the solum and very slow in the Cd horizon.

USE AND VEGETATION: Most of these soils are cultivated. Corn, sugar beets, beans and small grains are the principal crops.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: MLRA 99 in the thumb area of lower Michigan. The series is of large extent.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epidedon: from the surface to a depth of 23 cm (9 inches) (Ap horizon).
Cambic horizon: from a depth of 23 to 74 cm (9 to 29 inches) (Bw, Bg horizons).
Densic contact: at 112 cm (44 inches) (top of the Cd horizon).
Aquic conditions: reduced matrix color in the Bg horizon and iron depletions present in the Bw, C, and Cd horizons, below a depth of 23 cm (9 inches).
