E--3 to 7 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; weak medium granular structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; many very fine and fine roots; common medium and coarse roots; 35 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt wavy boundary.

EB--7 to 14 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common roots; common fine and medium tubular pores; 40 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick.)

Bw--14 to 25 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) very gravelly loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots and few coarse roots; common fine pores and few medium pores; 10 percent cobbles and 40 percent gravel; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (5 to 15 inches thick)

Bk1--25 to 34 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loam, pale brown (10YR 6/3) moist; massive; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and medium roots and few coarse roots; few fine and medium pores; 5 percent stones, 5 percent cobbles, and 40 percent gravel; disseminated lime; strongly effervescent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 10 inches thick)

Bk2--34 to 60 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; massive; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine and medium roots; few fine pores; 5 percent cobbles and 35 percent gravel; disseminated lime; violently effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.4).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Calaveras, Kadygulch, Mowbray, Pathead, Repkie, Repp, Specie, Wilde and Wilspring series. The Calaveras, Kadygulch, Repkie and Specie soils do not have horizons of secondary carbonate accumulation. The Mowbray soils do not have an albic horizon. The Pathead, Wilde, and Willspring soils are moderately deep to a lithic contact. The Repp soils have more than 60 percent rock fragments in the Bk horizon.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: The Kingspoint soils are on moraines and mountains. Elevations are 2,850 to 5,400 feet. Slopes are 2 to 60 percent. These soils formed in calcareous till. The climate is characterized by long, cold winters; moist springs; and warm, dry summers. Mean annual precipitation is 18 to 25 inches, most of which falls in winter and spring. Mean annual temperature is 39 to 45 degrees F. The frost-free period is 70 to 105 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow to rapid runoff; moderate permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Kingspoint soils are used as woodland and for understory grazing. Potential native vegetation is Douglas fir and ponderosa pine with an understory of pinegrass, common snowberry, mallow ninebark, and elk sedge.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Kingspoint soils are of small extent in northwestern Montana. MLRA 43A.
