KINGTUT SERIES

The Kingtut series consists of shallow to hardpan, well drained soils formed in alluvium from rhyolite. Kingtut soils are on mesas and plateaus. Slopes range from 3 to 12 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 12 inches. The mean annual air temperature is about 53 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, smectitic, mesic, shallow Ustalfic Petrocalcids

TYPICAL PEDON: Kingtut very gravelly sandy loam - woodland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 2 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak thin platy structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few very fine roots; few very fine irregular pores; 40 percent gravel; strongly effervescent, 3 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

AB--2 to 4 inches; dark brown (7.5YR 3/4) gravelly sandy clay loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine and fine roots; common fine tubular pores; 20 percent gravel; strongly effervescent, 5 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 4 inches thick)

Btk--4 to 17 inches; reddish brown (5YR 4/3) gravelly sandy clay, dark reddish brown (5YR 3/4) moist; moderate fine prismatic parting to moderate fine angular blocky structure; hard, friable, very sticky and very plastic; common very fine, fine, and medium roots; common fine tubular pores; 15 percent gravel and very hard calcium carbonate nodules; common prominent clay films on faces of peds and lining pores; strongly effervescent, 9 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (10 to 13 inches thick)

2Bkm--17 to 33 inches; calcium carbonate cemented petrocalcic with discontinuous laminar cap; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 16 inches thick)

3R--33 inches; rhyolite.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kingtut soils are on mesas and plateaus and have slopes of 3 to 12 percent. They formed in alluvium from rhyolite. Elevations range from 4,300 to 5,100 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 10 to 14 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 52 to 55 degrees F. The frost-free period is 150 to 165 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Promontory, Prieta, Valena, and Carri soils. Promontory soils do not have argillic horizons. Prieta soils are clayey-skeletal and do not have petrocalcic horizons. Valena soils are loamy and do not have petrocalcic horizons. Carri soils do not have petrocalcic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; slow permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: This soil is used for livestock grazing, recreation and wildlife habitat. Vegetation is Stansbury cliffrose, sideoats grama, black grama, broom snakeweed, banana yucca, skunkbush sumac and an overstory of Utah Juniper.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. This series is of minor extent. MLRA is 38.
