KINLEY SERIES

The Kinley series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in alluvium from mixed sources. Kinley soils are on fan terraces with slopes of 1 to 35 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 9 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 64 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Coarse-loamy, mixed, superactive, thermic Typic Haplocalcids

TYPICAL PEDON: Kinley gravelly sandy loam - rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A--0 to 2 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) gravelly sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 5/4) moist; moderate thin platy structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many fine irregular pores; 20 percent gravel; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (1 to 3 inches thick)

BA--2 to 9 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); clear wavy boundary. (0 to 8 inches thick)

Bk1--9 to 13 inches; light brown (7.5YR 6/4) sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, very friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 5 percent gravel; strongly effervescent, 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; few soft calcium carbonate masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); abrupt wavy boundary. (3 to 12 inches thick)

Bk2--13 to 24 inches; pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) sandy loam, pinkish gray (7.5 yr 6/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; 10 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 35 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; 10 percent hard calcium nodules; few soft calcium carbonate masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 15 inches thick)

Bk3--24 to 34 inches; pinkish gray (7.5YR 7/2) gravelly sandy loam, light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine roots; 25 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 40 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; continuous calcium carbonate coating on peds; common soft calcium carbonate masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (6 to 18 inches thick)

Bk4--34 to 50 inches; light gray (10YR 7/2) very gravelly sandy loam, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, firm, nonsticky and nonplastic; many very fine tubular pores; 40 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 35 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; continuous calcium carbonate coatings on peds; few soft calcium carbonate masses; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear wavy boundary. (10 to 21 inches thick)

C--50 to 60 inches; very pale brown (10YR 8/2) very gravelly sandy loam, light gray (10YR 7/2) moist; massive; hard, firm, nonsticky and nonplastic; common very fine tubular pores; 45 percent gravel; violently effervescent, 35 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Agust (TX), Algerita (NM), Cronese (CA), Grapevine (NV), Guijarral (CA), Nikey (UT), Rillino (AZ), Whitlock (AZ), and Yippen (NM) series. Agust, Algerita, Nikey, Rillino, Whitlock, and Yippen soils are moist in the control section more than 20 days cumulative during July-September. Cronese soils have durinodes. Grapevine soils average less than 15 percent rock fragments in the control section. Juijarral soils are dry in all parts from April to January and are in MLRA 17.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kinley soils are on fan terraces. Slopes range from 1 to 35 percent. These soils formed in alluvium from mixed sources. Elevations range from 1,600 to 3,500 feet. The mean annual precipitation is 6 to 12 inches. The mean annual air temperature is 59 to 70 degrees F. The frost-free period is 200 to 250 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Arizo, Castaneda, Franconia, Ireteba, Mohon, Wikieup and Yucca soils. Castaneda soils are moderately deep to a hardpan. Arizo, Franconia, Ireteba and Yucca soils do not have a calcic horizon. Mohon soils are fine textured. Wikieup soils are shallow to bedrock.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium or high runoff; moderately rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Vegetation includes big galleta, bush muhly, black grama, creosotebush, white bursage and rayless goldenhead.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Arizona. This series is of moderate extent. MLRA is 30. The name is from a local ranch.
