TYPE LOCATION: Clallam County, Washington; 400 feet north and 400 feet west of the SE corner of sec. 1, T.28N., R.15W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The solum and thickness of andic soil properties is 40 to 60 inches thick. The particle-size control section is 35 to 60 percent rock fragments that are mainly rounded pebbles but 5 to 15 percent are rounded cobbles. The umbric epipedon is 10 to 20 inches thick. The mean annual soil temperature is 47 to 51 degrees F. The difference between the mean summer soil temperature and winter soil temperature is 5 to 9 degrees F. The soil moisture regime is udic. The solum has moist bulk density of 0.75 to 0.90 g/cc, acid oxalate extractable aluminum plus one-half the iron is 2 to 4 percent, phosphate retention of 85 to 100. Acid oxalate extractable iron is 1.5 to 3.0 percent. The 15-bar water is 15 to 35 percent on dried samples.
The A horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 2 or 3 moist, 3 through 5 dry and chroma of 2 or 3. It has granular, angular blocky or subangular blocky structure. It has 7 to 15 percent organic matter. It has 5 to 15 cmol/kg of aluminum.
The Bw horizon has hue of 7.5YR or 10YR, value of 3 through 5 moist, 4 through 7 dry and chroma of 2 through 6 moist and 3 through 6 dry. It is very gravelly medial sandy loam, very gravelly medial loam or very gravelly medial silt loam. It is strongly acid or very strongly acid. It has 2 to 8 cmol/kg of aluminum. It has 2 to 7 percent organic matter.
The 2C horizon has hue of 7.5YR, 10YR, or 2.5Y, value of 3 through 5 moist, 4 through 6 dry and chroma of 2 through 4 moist and 3 or 4 dry. It is very gravelly sandy loam, very gravelly loamy sand, very cobbly sand, very cobbly sandy loam, extremely gravelly loamy sand, very gravelly sand, or extremely gravelly sand. It is moderately acid or strongly acid.
COMPETING SERIES: These are the Ascar, Grismar, Mudcreek, Necanicum, Solduc, Southshore and Traham series. Ascar soils are moderately deep to basalt. Mudcreek soils are moderately deep to dense till. Necanicum soils are on mountains over basalt. Southshore soils are 40 to 60 inches deep to cemented till. Traham soils are 24 to 36 inches deep to bedrock. Grismar and Solduc soils are moderately deep to sandy-skeletal.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Klone soils are on terraces and terrace escarpments at elevations of 50 to 1,200 feet. Slopes are 0 to 65 percent. They formed in poorly sorted glacial outwash. The soils are in a mild marine climate and have cool, moist summers and cool, wet winters. Mean annual precipitation is 80 to 130 inches. Average January temperature is about 38 degrees F., average July temperature is about 61 degrees F., and the mean annual temperature is about 49 degrees F. Frost-free season is 140 to 200 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Ilwaco, Ozette, Tealwhit and Snahopish soils. Ilwaco soils are medial. Ozette soils are medial and have dense till at depths of 40 to 60 inches. Tealwhit soils have a fine control section and an aquic moisture regime. Snahopish soils have higher amounts of organic matter and are isofrigid.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; medium runoff; permeability of the surface layer and subsoil is moderate and permeability of the substratum is rapid.
USE AND VEGETATION: Timber production is the principal use. Native vegetation is predominantly western hemlock with some Sitka spruce and western redcedar. Understory species include red huckleberry, salmon berry, Oregon oxalis, western swordfern, deer fern, ladyfern, salal and vine maple.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: West side of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington; MLRA 1. This series is of small extent.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Portland, Oregon
