KREYBILL SERIES


The Kreybill series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in loamy alluvium from irrigation water over eolian deposits derived from mixed sedimentary materials. Kreybill soils are on interfluves and plains. Slopes range from 0 to 2 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 305 centimeters and the mean annual temperature is about 11 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Aquic Haplocalcids

TYPICAL PEDON: Kreybill silty clay loam, on a north facing, linear, 1 percent slope in pasture at an elevation of 1,260 meters (4,118 feet). (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.) When described on September 17, 2011 the soil was dry from 0 to 15 centimeters and moist from 15 to 200 centimeters.

Ap--0 to 15 centimeters (0 to 6 inches); light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) loam, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2), moist; weak fine granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 3 percent medium prominent reddish brown (5YR 4/4), moist, relict masses of oxidized iron in matrix; slightly effervescent, 1 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4); clear smooth boundary. (8 to 18 centimeters thick)

Bw--15 to 46 centimeters (6 to 18 inches); yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4), moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; very hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; 10 percent distinct pressure faces on all faces of peds; 5 percent medium prominent reddish brown (5YR 4/4), moist, relict masses of oxidized iron in matrix; slightly effervescent, 1 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear smooth boundary. (25 to 46 centimeters thick)

Bk1--46 to 93 centimeters (18 to 37 inches); light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sandy clay loam, yellowish brown (10YR 5/4), moist; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; 10 percent distinct pressure faces on all faces of peds; 3 percent fine prominent irregular reddish brown (5YR 4/4), moist, relict masses of oxidized iron in matrix; 15 percent medium distinct irregular carbonate masses in matrix; violently effervescent, 16 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.8); gradual smooth boundary. (33 to 51 centimeters thick)

Bk2--93 to 132 centimeters (37 to 52 inches); pale brown (10YR 6/3) loam, brown (10YR 5/3), moist; weak medium subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 5 percent medium prominent gray (10YR 5/1), moist, masses of reduced iron in matrix; 5 percent medium distinct irregular carbonate masses in matrix; violently effervescent, 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (25 to 51 centimeters thick)

CBy--132 to 200 centimeters (52 to 80 inches); pale brown (10YR 6/3) sandy clay loam, brown (10YR 5/3), moist; massive; moderately hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 20 percent medium distinct spherical gypsum crystals in matrix; slightly effervescent, 2 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; slightly alkaline (pH 7.4).

TYPE LOCATION: Otero County, Colorado; about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile) east of Holbrook Reservoir; about 229 meters (750 feet) west and 274 meters (900 feet) north of the southeast corner of sec. 8, T. 23 S., R. 55 W.; Cheraw, Colorado USGS topographic quadrangle; UTM zone 13 624062 E 4213176 N; latitude 38 degrees, 3 minutes, 28.1 seconds N. and longitude 103 degrees, 35 minutes, 9.2 seconds W., NAD 83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: The soil moisture control section is moist in some part March through May, intermittently moist June through September. Profile is continuously moist below 100 centimeters during the growing season.
Moisture regime: aridic moisture regime bordering on ustic.
Mean annual soil temperature: 10 to 13 degrees C. (50 to 55 degrees F.)
Depth to calcic horizon: 41 to 64 centimeters (16 to 25 inches)
Depth to redox depletions: 76 to 99 centimeters (30 to 39 inches)
Depth to endosaturation: 76 to 127 centimeters (30 to 50 inches) from April to September

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Numa and Wapiti series.

Numa soils have a mollic epipedon, are well drained, and occur on paleoterraces.
Wapiti soils have an argillic horizon, are well drained, and occur on interfluves.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY:
Drainage: Moderately well drained
Saturated hydraulic conductivity: high or moderately high

USE AND VEGETATION: Used primarily as irrigated cropland. Principal crops are alfalfa and grass hay. Native vegetation is mainly blue grama, alkali sacaton, galleta, inland saltgrass, and four-wing saltbush. ESD R069XY030CO: Salt Meadow

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Arkansas River Valley, Colorado; LRR G, MLRA 69 and 67B; The series is of small extent.

SERIES PROPOSED: Otero County, Colorado; Otero County soil survey area, 2013. The name is coined from a town site in the area.

LAN 9/2013 This soil was previously identified as a wet phase of the Harvey series. This soil has a consistent water table during the growing season at depths within 76 to 127 centimeters of the surface.
