KUTLER SERIES

The Kutler series consists of moderately deep, somewhat excessively drained soils that formed in material weathered from granite. Kutler soils are on mountain slopes and ridges and have slopes of 15 to 65 percent. Mean annual precipitation is about 18 inches and mean annual air temperature is about 43 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Loamy-skeletal, mixed, superactive, frigid Typic Haplustolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Kutler very gravelly sandy loam, grassland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

A1--0 to 6 inches; brown (10YR 4/3) very gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; moderate medium granular structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; 40 percent gravel; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (4 to 10 inches thick)

AC--6 to 11 inches; brown (7.5YR 4/2) very gravelly sandy loam, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2) moist; weak medium granular structure; slightly hard, very friable; 60 percent gravel; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (3 to 10 inches thick)

C1--11 to 23 inches; brown (7.5YR 5/2) extremely gravelly sandy loam, brown (7.5YR 4/2) moist; massive; loose; 80 percent gravel; neutral; gradual smooth boundary. (8 to 24 inches thick)

C2r--23 to 240 inches; grus (highly weathered granite).

TYPE LOCATION: El Paso County, Colorado; approximately 0.25 mile northwest of toll gate on Crystal Park Road in SE1/4 Sec. 8, T. 14 S., R. 67 W.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 44 to 47 degrees F. Depth to a paralithic contact of grus ranges from 20 to 40 inches. The mollic epipedon ranges in thickness from about 10 to 16 inches. Rock fragments in the control section range from 35 to 80 percent and are mostly 1/2 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The fine earth fraction of the control section ranges in clay from 10 to 25 percent. The hue of the profile is 5YR through 10YR.

The A horizon has value of 3 or 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 through 3.

The C horizon has value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 through 6.

COMPETING SERIES: These are the Bitton and Syrett series. Bitton soils are deep. Syrett soils are moderately deep to a lithic contact of limestone.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Kutler soils are on mountain slopes and ridges. Slopes range from 15 to 65 percent. The soils formed in parent materials weathered from granite. At the type location the average annual precipitation is about 17 to 20 inches. Mean annual temperature is 42 to 45 degrees F.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Broadmoor, Coldcreek and Telcolote soils, all of which have ochric epipedons. Also, Coldcreek and Tecolote soils have argillic horizons.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Somewhat excessively drained; rapid runoff; rapid permeability.

USE AND VEGETATION: Used is for native pastureland and recreation. Native vegetation is mainly grass with some pine trees and shrubs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: East-central Colorado along foothills of the front range. The series is of moderate extent.
