TYPICAL PEDON: Kentuck mucky silt loam, on a smooth 0 percent slope, in woodland. (Colors are for a moist soil.)
Oe--0 to 3 inches; moderately decomposed to slightly decomposed plant material consisting of leaves and twigs; clear smooth boundary. (0 to 4 inches thick)
A--3 to 13 inches; black (10YR 2/1) mucky silt loam; strong fine granular structure; very friable; slightly sticky, slightly plastic; many very fine and fine, common medium and coarse roots; many very fine and fine, common medium irregular pores; extremely acid; clear wavy boundary. (10 to 22 inches thick)
Eg--13 to 24 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) silt loam; weak medium subangular blocky structure; very friable; slightly sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine, common fine, and few medium tubular pores; common medium prominent brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) iron accumulations and common medium distinct white (10YR 8/1) clay depletions; very strongly acid; clear wavy boundary. (4 to 15 inches thick)
Btg1--24 to 37 inches; light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) silt loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; friable; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; common very fine and fine and few medium roots; many very fine, common fine, and few medium tubular pores; common faint clay films on faces of peds; common fine prominent strong brown (7.5YR 5/8) iron accumulations and common medium distinct white (10YR 8/1) iron depletions; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary.
Btg2--37 to 45 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) silty clay loam; moderate medium subangular blocky structure; firm; moderately sticky, moderately plastic; few very fine and fine roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; common distinct clay films on faces of peds; common fine prominent reddish yellow (7.5YR 6/8) iron accumulations and few medium distinct white (10YR 8/1) iron depletions; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (Combined thickness of the Btg is 15 to 40 inches.)
2BCg--45 to 56 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) fine sandy loam; massive; very friable; slightly sticky, nonplastic; few very fine and fine roots; many very fine tubular pores; few fine distinct white (10YR 8/1) iron depletions; very strongly acid; gradual wavy boundary. (5 to 24 inches thick)

TYPE LOCATION: Dorchester County, Maryland; about 2,800 feet southwest of the intersection of Beaver Neck Village Road and Linkwood Road, 50 feet northwest of railroad: lat. 38 degrees 32 minutes 20 seconds N. and long. 75 degrees 58 minutes 34 seconds W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Solum Thickness: 30 to 56 inches
Depth to Bedrock: Greater than 60 inches
Depth to Lithologic Discontinuity: 30 to 50 inches
Depth to Seasonal High Water Table: + 6 to 6 inches, December to June
Rock Fragments: 0 to 5 percent, by volume throughout the profile, mostly fine rounded quartz gravel
Soil Reaction: Extremely acid to strongly acid, throughout the profile, unless limed

Landform: Low-lying uplands, narrow ancient floodplains, and slightly concave closed depressions

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS:
Elkton soils--poorly drained, do not have an umbric epipedon, and have 27 to 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section, on slightly higher landforms
Othello soils--poorly drained, do not have an umbric epipedon, and have 18 to 27 percent clay in the particle-size control section, on slightly higher landforms
USE: Most wooded
VEGETATION: Wooded areas have an overstory of red maple, sweetgum, willow oak, swamp chestnut oak, and water oak. Common understory species are greenbriar, American holly, sphagnum moss, waxmyrtle, sweetbay, ferns, and sedges.
