LARYAN SERIES

Laryan series consist of deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in reworked loess and colluvium or glacial moraine deposits derived from metamorphic rock. Laryan soils are on upper mountain broad valley drainages and narrow benches of mountain valley backslopes. Slopes are 4 to 15 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 675 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 5 degrees C.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Clayey, kaolinitic, nonacid Histic Cryaquepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Laryan muck-rangeland and wildlife habitat. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oe--0 to 7 cm; very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moderately decomposed willow leaves and twigs, and grass, very dark brown (10YR 2/2) moist; weak coarse subangular blocky structure; moderately hard, friable, moderately sticky, slightly plastic; 60 percent unrubbed fiber; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt smooth boundary. (7 to 25 cm thick)

Oa--7 to 30 cm; black (10YR 2/1) muck, black (10YR 2/1) moist; massive; hard, friable, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; 30 percent unrubbed fiber; many very fine, fine and medium roots throughout; few fine irregular and tubular pores; neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt smooth boundary. (15 to 23 cm thick)

Cg--30 to 110 cm; dark greenish gray (5GY 3/1) clay, dark greenish gray (5GY 3/1) moist; massive; very hard, firm, very sticky and very plastic; 90 percent of the matrix is reduced with 10 percent medium distinct irregular noncemented light brown (7.5YR 6/4) moist masses of reduced iron adjacent to roots and pores; few fine and medium roots throughout; few fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 7.2); abrupt irregular boundary. (70 to 120 cm thick)

R--110 cm; fractured metamorphic bedrock.

TYPE LOCATION: Elko County, Nevada; Ruby Mountains, up Lamoille Canyon about 1 mile north of/before the canyon turn around/parking lot; about 125 feet north and 2,400 feet east of the southwest corner of section 30, T. 32 N., R. 59 E.; USGS Ruby Valley School 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; latitude 40 degrees 37 minutes 5.45 seconds N and longitude 115 degrees 22 minutes 7.59 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 40.6181806latitude, -115.3687750longitude.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:
Soil moisture: Dry in mid-summer through fall for less than 90 days. The soil is moist in the upper part in late fall, winter, spring and early summer. A seasonal water table occurs at the surface after snow melt through July. Additional moisture is supplied by run on from adjacent steep upper slopes and late summer thunderstorms; aquic soil moisture regime.
Mean annual soil temperature: 4 to 7 degrees C.
Mean summer soil temperature: 6 to 8 degrees C.
Histic epipedon thickness: 30 to 40 cm.
Depth to redoximorphic features: 30 to 60 cm.
Depth to a lithic contact: 100 to 150 cm.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: Averages 35 to 50 percent.
Rock fragments: 0 to 15 percent.

O horizons
Hue: 10yr or 7.5yr.
Value: 2 through 4 dry, 2 through 3 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry, 1 or 2 moist.
Organic matter content: 70 to 90 percent.
Rock fragments: 0 to 15 percent, mainly gravel.

A horizons (less than 18 cm thick, when present)
Hue: 10yr.
Value: 3 or 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist.
Chroma: 2 through 4 dry, 1 or 2 moist.
Clay percent: averages 10 to 18 percent.
Organic matter content: 15 to 35 percent.
Texture: Silt loam, loam, and sandy loam.
Rock fragments: 15 to 35 percent, mainly gravel.
Structure: Week or moderate and medium or coarse subangular blocky structure.
Redoximorphic features: Some pedons may contain 0 to 5 percent prominent irregular masses and 0 to 10 percent medium distinct irregular noncemented masses of oxidized iron on surfaces along root channels.

Cg horizon
Hue: 2.5YR, 10YR, Gley 2, 5GY.
Value: 5 or 6, 2 through 5 moist.
Chroma: 1 or 2 moist.
Organic matter content: 0.25 to 1 percent.
Clay percent: 35 to 50 percent, some pedons have subhorizons that range as low as 27 percent clay.
Rock fragments: 0 to 15 percent, mainly gravel.
Texture: Sandy clay, clay loam, clay, silty clay loam, or silty clay.
Structure: Subangular blocky, columnar, or massive.

COMPETING SERIES: There are currently no competing series.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Laryan soils are on upper mountain broad valley drainages and narrow benches of mountain valley backslopes. These soils formed in reworked loess and colluvium or glacial moraine deposits derived from metamorphic rock. Slopes are 4 to 15 percent. Elevations range from 2,560 to 3,200 meters. The climate is subhumid with cold, moist winters and cool, dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 550 to 750 mm derived mostly from snow with additional moisture as run-on from adjacent steep slopes and summer thunderstorms. The mean annual temperature is 3 to 6 degrees C and the frost-free period is 40 to 60 days. Frost may occur during any month at higher elevations.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Bendastik, Poppellen, Hourland, and Hackwood series. Bendastik, Poppellen, Hourland, and Hackwood soils average less than 35 percent clay in the particle-size control section.

DRAINAGE AND SATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY: Very poorly drained; low surface runoff; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.

USE AND VEGETATION: Laryan soils are used for rangeland and wildlife habitat. The vegetation is principally Sierra willow, Geyer's willow, mountain brome, bluegrass, sweetcicely, nettleleaf giant hyssop, and monk's hood.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northeastern Nevada. MLRA 25.

MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.

SERIES ESTABLISHED: Elko County, Nevada, Humboldt National Forest, Nevada, North Part, 2016.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Histic epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 30 cm (Oe and Oi horizons).
Zone of endosaturation - The zone from 0 to 110 cm (Oe, Oa, and Cg horizons).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 55 to 100 cm (lower part of the Cg horizon).
