LEESVILLE SERIES

The Leesville series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in gravelly alluvium from serpentine rock sources. Leesville soils are on nearly level to gently sloping alluvial fans. Slopes are 0 to 5 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 19 inches and the mean annual air temperature is about 59 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy over sandy or sandy-skeletal, magnesic, thermic Pachic Haploxerolls

TYPICAL PEDON: Leesville clay loam, rangeland. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.)

A1--0 to 3 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) when moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; few very fine, fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; neutral (pH 7.2); clear smooth boundary.

A2--3 to 16 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) when moist; moderate fine and coarse subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; slightly alkaline (pH 7.8); clear smooth boundary.

A3--16 to 21 inches; dark gray (10YR 4/1) clay loam, very dark gray (10YR 3/1) when moist; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and medium roots; common very fine and fine tubular pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); abrupt smooth boundary.

2C1--21 to 30 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) gravelly sandy loam, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) when moist; weak fine subangular blocky structure; hard, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; few fine and medium roots; common fine and medium interstitial and few fine tubular pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); abrupt smooth boundary.

3C2--30 to 46 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) very gravelly loamy sand, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) when moist; massive; loose, loose, non sticky and non plastic; few fine and medium roots; common fine and medium interstitial pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary.

3C3--46 to 60 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) extremely gravelly loamy sand, very dark grayish brown (10YR 3/2) when moist; massive; loose, loose, non sticky and non plastic; few fine and medium roots; many fine and medium interstitial and few fine tubular pores; moderately alkaline (pH 8.3).

TYPE LOCATION: Colusa County, California; about 4 miles southwest of Leesville; about 1300 feet east and 500 feet south of the northwest corner of section 20, T. 15 N., R. 5 W., MDB&M; 39 degrees, 8 minutes, 20 seconds north latitude, 122 degrees, 26 minutes, 30 seconds west longitude; USGS Leesville, California topographic quadrangle.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: The mean annual soil temperature is 58 degrees to 60 degrees F. Ca to Mg ratios are 1:3 to 1:6. The 5 to 16 inch SMCS is dry in all parts from June 1 to October 31 and moist in some or all parts from November 1 to May 31.

A horizons have dry colors of 10YR 4/2, 4/1, 3/2; moist colors are 10YR 3/1, 2/2, 2.5Y 3/1. Texture is clay loam. Clay content ranges from 25 to 35 percent. Coarse fragments range from 5 to 15 percent. Reaction is neutral to moderately alkaline.

C horizons have dry colors of 10YR 5/2, 4/2, moist colors are 10YR 4/2, 3/2. Textures are sandy loam or loamy sand. Clay content ranges from 5 to 15 percent. Coarse fragments range from 20 to 60 percent and average 35 to 50 percent.
Reaction is moderately alkaline.

COMPETING SERIES: There are no other series in this family.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Gently sloping alluvial fans. The Leesville soils occur at elevations of 1340 to 1600 feet. Slopes are 0 to 5 percent. The climate has relatively hot, dry summers and cool moist winters. Mean annual precipitation ranges from 18 to 20 inches. Mean January temperature is 43 degrees F., mean July temperature is 76 degrees F, mean annual temperature ranges from 58 degrees to 60 degrees F. Frost-free season is 185 to 210 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: Venado(T) and Bearvalley(T). Venado(T) soils are fine textured and Bearvalley(T) soils are sandy throughout.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained. Surface runoff negligable to low; permeability moderate. Flooding has been reduced by erosion of stream beds.

USE AND VEGETATION: Rangeland. Vegetation is annual grasses and forbs.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Small valleys of the Coast Range of northern California where it is inextensive. MLRA 14.
