TYPE LOCATION: San Miguel County, Colorado; 2,400 feet north and 2,000 feet east of the southwest corner, sec. 20, T. 43 N., R. 14 W.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Mean annual soil temperature ranges from 43 to 45 degrees F, and mean summer soil temperature ranges from 58 to 65 degrees F. Rock fragments range from 5 to 10 percent in the A horizon. They are dominantly pebbles and cobbles. The C horizon has a rock fragment range of 5 to 35 percent. Pebbles, cobbles, and stones are all common.
The A horizon has hue of 2.5Y or 10YR, value of 3 or 4 dry, 2 or 3 moist, and chroma of 1 or 2. The 2C horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.5YR, value of 4 to 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 3 or 4. It is gravelly clay or clay.
COMPETING SERIES: This is the Nusmag series in this family. Nusmag soils are calcareous throughout the pedon.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Lillylands soils are on mountain slopes. Slopes are 15 to 50 percent. The soil formed in colluvium derived from sandstone and mixed materials. Elevation ranges from 7,400 to 8,500 feet. The mean annual precipitation ranges from 17 to 19 inches. Mean annual temperature ranges from 41 to 43 degrees F. Frost-free period is 70 to 90 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Dapoin, Leaps, Narraguinnep, Ryman, and Sagedale soils. Dapoin soils lack a pachic epipedon. Ryman and Leaps soils have a cryic temperature regime. Sagedale soils lack a mollic epipedon. Narraguinnep soils have montmorillonitic mineralogy.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; very rapid runoff; slow permeability.
USE AND VEGETATION: Used for summer and fall livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. Principal native vegetation is Gambel oak, mountain brome, elk sedge, and serviceberry.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Southwestern Colorado and possibly adjacent parts of New Mexico and Utah. The series is of moderate extent.
