LOVEBOLDT SERIES
The Loveboldt series consists of very deep, well drained soils formed in alluvium derived from mixed rocks. Loveboldt soils are on stream terraces. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 150 mm and the mean annual temperature is about 11 degrees C.
TAXONOMIC CLASS: Sandy, mixed, mesic Typic Torrifluvents
TYPICAL PEDON: Loveboldt loamy sand--rangeland. (Colors are for dry soils unless otherwise noted).
A--0 to 13 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) loamy sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine roots; many fine interstitial pores; slightly effervescent; strongly alkaline (pH 8.6); clear smooth boundary. (7 to 20 cm thick)
C1--13 to 28 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; many fine and common medium roots; many fine interstitial pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (10 to 25 cm thick).
C2--28 to 33 cm; light gray (10YR 7/2) silt loam, grayish brown (10YR 5/2) moist; weak fine platy structure parting to weak fine subangular blocky; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; common fine roots; may fine tubular pores; strongly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary. (0 to 8 cm thick)
C3--33 to 76 cm; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) sand, dark grayish brown (10YR 4/2) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; few fine roots; common fine interstitial pores; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0); gradual wavy boundary. (0 to 50 cm thick)
C4--76 to 152 cm; brown (10YR 5/3) stratified loamy very fine sand to sand, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; common fine interstitial pores; many medium distinct brown (7.5YR 4/4) masses of iron-manganese accumulation; slightly effervescent; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).
TYPE LOCATION: Pershing County, Nevada; about 1 mile east of Lovelock on a stream terrace above the Humboldt River; about 1,700 feet north and 980 feet east of the southwest corner, section 25, T. 27 N., R. 31 E.; USGS Lovelock quadrangle; latitude 40 degrees 10 minutes 38.9 seconds N and longitude 118 degrees 27 minutes 13.1 seconds W; WGS84 Decimal Degrees 40.1774722 latitude, -118.453639 longitude.
RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Mean annual soil temperature: 11 to 13 degrees C.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Salinity(EC): 0 to 2 dS/m.
Sodicity(SAR): 0 to 2.
Particle-size control section - Clay content: Averages 3 to 12 percent.
Rock fragments: Averages 0 to 10 percent, mainly gravel.
A horizon

Value: 5 through 7 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry or moist.
C horizons
Hue: 10YR or 2.5Y.
Value: 4 through 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist.
Chroma: 2 or 3 dry or moist.
Texture: Stratified very fine sandy loam, silt loam through coarse sand, and averaging sand or loamy sand.
Rock fragment: 0 to 10 percent; can include thin strata with up to 30 percent, mainly gravel.
COMPETING SERIES: These are
Baroid,
Beebe and
Trail series.
Baroid soils have a mean annual soil temperature of 8 to 10 degrees C.
Beebe soils have a sodium absorption ratio of 20 to 70 in the upper 50 cm.
Trail soils are intermittently moist in some part of the soil moisture control section during July through September.
GEOGRAPHIC SETTING: Loveboldt soils are on stream terraces. These soils formed in alluvium derived from mixed sources. Slopes are 0 to 2 percent. Elevations range from 1190 to 1280 meters. The climate is semiarid with cool moist winters and warm dry summers. The mean annual precipitation is 125 to 180 mm, the mean annual temperature is 9 to 12 degrees C., and the frost-free period is 120 to 140 days.
GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are
Perwaso,
Nevadanile, and
Pelic. Perwaso soils have a discontinuity with contrasting particle sizes. Nevadanile soils have aquic conditions above 100 cm. Pelic soils have aquic conditions above 50 cm.
DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Well drained; slow runoff; rapid permeability; moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity.
USE AND VEGETATION: Loveboldt soils are used mainly for livestock grazing and wildlife habitat. The present vegetation is basin big sagebrush, Torrey's quailbush, and rubber rabbitbrush.
DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Western Nevada. These soils are not extensive MLRA 27.
MLRA SOIL SURVEY REGIONAL OFFICE (MO) RESPONSIBLE: Davis, California.
SERIES ESTABLISHED: Pershing County (Lovelock Soil Survey), Nevada, 2009.
REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:
Ochric epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 18 cm (A and part of C horizons).
Particle-size control section - The zone from 25 to 100 cm (parts of C1, C2, C3, and C4 horizons).
Redoximorphic features in the C4 horizon are relic.
